Recently Vodaphone confirmed rumors that they were going to sell Apple iPhones in India, now Bharti Airtel, a top Indian telecom player has revealed plans to sell iPhone on their network in India.

Bharti Airtel released a press release that they “had signed a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to India, later this year”. That surely heats up the race to sell Apple iPhones in India, since Airtel is India's leading integrated telecom services provider with over 60 million customers!

Last year Apple iPhone premiered at Apple Retail Stores in US and instantly topped the most wanted gadgets lists worldwide. Now Indians can become proud owners of Apple iPhone thanks to Airtel and Vodaphone.

You can buy an unlocked iPhone in India from the gray market for Rs.25000 ($600 approx), but soon you can buy iphones legally and flaunt it to your friends. Apple crashed the iphone prices by $200 last year and recently Apple doubled the memory, so a 8GB iphone is now available for $399 at Apple stores. Make the most of your wide-screen monitor with DExposE2 [Online Tech Tips]

Posted: 13 May 2008 06:36 AM CDT

DExposE2 is a great partner for your large wide-screen display, putting that extra screen real estate to work navigating around your documents and applications.  Yes, alt-tabbing is quick as long as you only work on a single window per application.  Who does that!?  My applications always have multiple windows open, especially the case when I am working in MS Office.

The Mac OS X desktop interface has had the flashy and functional task-switcher Exposé since the Panther release in 2003.  Windows Vista has a limited feature called Flip3D which has some of the power of Mac Exposé.  Vista also has the freeware app called Switcher which is better, but requires Aero to run.  Now a new app for Windows XP as well as Vista, DExposE2, brings the original capabilities of Exposé to most Windows users - at a bargain price - free!  Available in both a regular installable version as well as a portable no-install-needed flavor, you can check out the download here.

Not familiar with Mac Exposé or what it can do?  Here are the basics -  and DExposE2 bring these to your XP or Vista PC:

  1. Resize and display all application windows without overlap - F9
  2. Resize and display all windows for only the active application without overlap - F10
  3. Hide all windows and show the desktop - F11
  4. Replace all windows as they were - F11 again.  (Windows taskbar won’t do this!)

What’s to like?  Well - have you got a large wide-screen monitor?  Do you work on multiple versions of documents at the same time?  The thing I love about using DExposE2 on my XP PC with 20″ wide-screen display is being able to hit the F10 hotkey and get a view of all my in-process word documents, arranged on my screen with contents visible.  I can then click on the one I need next and have it go back to full screen mode for editing.

This is a lot easier and productive than looking at the list of open documents from within Word itself, which just gives me a filename to go by.  With DExposE2 I get a live and legible view of the contents of each window.

I can view all windows for a single application (like Word or Excel), or I can get all windows - which of course means they are all a bit smaller.  To view all Windows I use F9:

Widescreen1

That’s a lot of apps and windows!  I go back to where I was either by hitting the same Fkey again, or using Escape.  I can focus on just my Word documents, by hitting F10 when I have Word as the focus application:

Here I see just my three active Word documents, with the documents large enough for me to scan them and quickly use the mouse to pick the one I want to work on next.

SNAG-0001

There are a few other cool features such as resizing in slow motion, closing  windows from the display, and creating on-screen hotspots like Mac Exposé comes with.  So if you are the proud owner of a wide-screen monitor, maybe it’s time you head over to DExposE2, and at least give the portable version a try!  If you need more convincing, here is a Youtube video showing DExposE2 in action.  Unfortunately the production values aren’t great.  It’s actually just as easy to download it and try it out.

BlackBerry Bold to compete with Apple iPhone [TechZilo]

Posted: 13 May 2008 06:31 AM CDT

RIM (makers of BlackBerry range of handsets) launched BlackBerry 9000, aka Blackberry Bold smartphone. Aimed squarely at Apple’s iPhone, Bold supports the much-hyped 3G networks, integrated GPS and Wi-Fi. RIM also said that BlackBerry Bold can run more sophisticated business software, thanks to faster hardware.

BlackBerry Bold 9000 BlackBerry has been preferred by business customers throughout the world, thanks to the superior business capabilities. However, with smartphones getting increasingly sophisticated, personal devices like iPhone has business features to rival BlackBerry. In fact, ever since its launch, iPhone has gnawed away at Blackberry’s share in various markets, notably USA.

The Bold also is beautifully styled, with a smooth black finish, perhaps trying to woo customers with the design of the Bold. BlackBerry Bold allows users to manage and sync their music with iTunes, which is another attempt at wooing Apple users.

An interesting bit: Some BlackBerry users are addicted to it so much so that they are called CrackBerries, in reference to ‘crack‘.

Toshiba R500 - competitor to Macbook Air or gymnast? [TechZilo]

Posted: 13 May 2008 06:09 AM CDT

Toshiba Portege R500 Ever since Apple came out with the Macbook Air ultraportable notebook, competitiors have tried to mimic Macbook Air in terms of size, weight and features (in comparable form factors). Lenovo’s X300, Toshiba’s R500 etc. were some of them.

Checking out Toshiba’s Portege R500, the form factor, flexibility(literally) and weight(1.7 kg pounds) of the ultraportable are impressive. The flexibility of R500 is incredible, if the official video on YouTube is to be believed.

The hardware is terrible (1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM and Windows XP Pro), but the point of this post was to:

  • Show off the amazing flexibility of the display, which we could see in future laptops, and perhaps practical foldable displays are closer than we think.
  • Emphasize the extent to which rivals have gone to beat Macbook Air (but fell short in design and specs).

Also see: specs of Apple Macbook Air and Toshiba R500.

Note: The optical drive shown in the picture above is not included in the current version which weighs 1.7 pounds.

Turn your CDs into flash drives using Vista’s Live File System [Online Tech Tips]

Posted: 13 May 2008 06:03 AM CDT

Windows Vista implements a great new way to use your Optical media, and that is the Live file system. The Live File System essentially allows you to use regular CDs and DVDs as you would Flash Drives. This means that you can just copy data to your media without the need to burn them. It also allows you to delete files off a DVD or CD. Though there are some disadvantages, which we’ll get to later.

Preparing your Media

This is pretty much automatic. Just pop in your CD or DVD and Autoplay should pop up with the following options:

image

Just hit “Burn files to Disc” and you’re good to go. Even if Autoplay is switched off, you can just head over to “Computer” and double click the appropriate Optical drive. Click “show formatting options” and you should now be looking at this.

image

Now we get to the topic of versions. You can use 4 versions of the Live File system. The descriptions are provided. Go ahead and choose the one you find most suitable. I personally recommend 2.01, which is also the Windows default.

Now, make sure you have assigned an appropriate name to the media and click Next. You will be presented with the following status Window:

image

Let it complete, and you’re done! You now have a CD/DVD that uses the Live File System. Using it should not be an issue, as it functions mostly like a flash drive.

Disadvantages

As neat as it is, the Live file system does have its disadvantages.

  • Compatibility: The Live File System was designed to be used with Vista, and certain versions are backward compatible as well. But the fact is, its certainly not as compatible as a Mastered CD/DVD.
  • Free Space not recovered: This is rather a big issue. Once you delete something, you don’t actually recover the space. The deletion merely “hides” the files. It’s like having a flash drive that permanently loses the space you utilize.
  • Can’t switch over to Mastered: Once you format your disc using the UDF, you’re stuck with UDF. You can’t re-format it using the traditional File System. You can change the version though.
  • Close Session: When you press the eject button of you Optical drive after using the Live files System, you will get a notification like this one:

image

Windows takes about ten seconds to close the session. But considering the time you save by not needing to burn the disc, this is hardly a setback.

To sum it up, even though the Live File system has its share of setbacks, it is still a great new feature, and one that every Vista user must try.

This is a guest post written by Om J. Bathija, a tech enthusiast and blogger.

How to create podcasts - A handy guide! [ReviewSaurus - The Techie Dino!]

Posted: 13 May 2008 02:21 AM CDT

Well, a couple of posts back I’d posted that it’s good to start a podcast, however there is always a thing called Good podcast and a bad podcast. Just like a good blog and a bad blog. So, how can one be a champion podcaster. Well, I’ve not started one yet, so can’t say that how one can be a great podcaster.

However, Jim has created 10 videos and talks about various aspects of podcasting, how to create podcasts and even tells you that while doing a podcast, how important is lightning, sound and your clothes can be. He even tells you that what camera you should opt for, if at all you decide to start a podcast.

Note this is a contest entry plus a resource entry for every to know that yes, it makes sense to start a podcast and may be this is my first step to jump into podcasting, may be I’m just being camera shy. Anyone for the podcasts ?

FreshAIRApps [Brajeshwar]

James Whittaker’s FreshAIRApps is not just a website that showcase some of the best and popular Adobe AIR Applications but also provides the community with AIR updates, tutorials and other resources.

The Showcase is the main attraction at FreshAIRApps. It gives a review of an AIR app and allows users to provide opinions in the comments and rate the apps. Users/Visitors can also submit an AIR app for reviewing.

FreshAIRApps is perhaps the first of its kind to concentrate totally on Adobe AIR. It might just prove to be a great resource site for the Adobe AIR developer and designer community.

How to Access Macros Settings in Office 2007 [-| Life Rocks! 2.0 |-]

Posted: 13 May 2008 02:09 AM CDT

Office 2007 has lot of improvements over the previous version and the notable feature is the ribbon where the menus and controls have been rearranged. Macros settings is one toolbar which is missing in the new Office 2007 format. In Office 2003, one can access Macros directly from Tools-> Macros, but in latest version of Office, its rearranged into developer toolbar which is not displayed in Office ribbon by default.

To access Macros in Office 2007, click on the Office icon on the top left hand corner and select Word Options or Excel options based on the program you are using. In the Options window, select the Popular tab and check the box against “Show Developer Tab in ribbon“.

Click ok and now you can see the developer tab in the ribbon and Macros inside this tab.

[Mac OS X] CheckBook - the ultimate finance management software! [ReviewSaurus - The Techie Dino!]

Posted: 13 May 2008 02:02 AM CDT

checkbook.jpg

When it comes to finance management, many people prefer it the old method of writing the finance entries in diaries or specific books as they find it pretty handy and safe to do so. However in this digital age, where computer games are one of the first games kids play with, can we expect them to maintain their financial records on the same old books? I guess not! In fact, I want to keep my own financial records on the computer because I believe that it’s more safe and easy to maintain too.

There are many software available on windows when it comes to personal finance management and Microsoft Money is one of the most respected software in that field. However, when it comes to OS X I guess the software that I’m reviewing right now has to be one of the easiest and best software ever for personal finance management.

CheckBook allows you to add multiple accounts and gives a very simple to use interface that anyone who isn’t good with accounting can use the software without any problem. Although, I’ve studied some accounting but still I know that I know nothing about it. I was able to create the entries and it showed me various reports and thus helped me know that where and how my money is flowing. It even let you mark the entries (deposits) as taxable or not.

There are other personal finance management software available and none of them has looked so impressive. I’ll continue reviewing other software in this field and will post in case I find anything better than CheckBook, however till this time I’m going to keep my finances with this software only.

In case you don’t have any media player ot play your music files its time you convert them into stand alone players. How ? Audio/Video To Exe converts any music or video file into an EXE or stand alone program which can play the music right for you.

Audio video to exe

It supports extensions like: 3gp, aac, ac3, exe, flac, flv, gif, mp2, mp3, mp4 and many more which covers almost every format. However the free version does not allow to change bit rate but I don’t think you will be requiring in case you want to use it for time being.

View Complete Information About Your Hard Drives [Drive Space Manager] [Techie Buzz]

Posted: 12 May 2008 01:37 PM CDT

Managing multiple hard drives can be quite a nightmare, I have a 500 GB Lacie external HDD, a 40 GB portable and a 8 GB pen drive in addition to my 250 GB internal HDD on my laptop.

In total I have 2 drives on my computer and 5 external drives, viewing information for all those drives is not possible without manually clicking on the drive and checking the properties. This is where DriveSpacio is hugely useful.

DriveSpacio is a Drive Space Manager which displays you information about all your drives in one place. You can view information such as size of the drive, what kind of file system its using, amount of of free space and more.

drive-spacio-drive-space-screenshot

DriveSpacio uses different charts to show you representation of your drive. It can get quite detailed information about folders and files too.

DriveSpacio Features

  • See ALL your drives info (file system, size, free, allocated, cluster size, etc) at glance.
  • Graphical representation of folders and files sizes in two flavors: pie and bar charts
  • Scan speed comparable to commercial programs
  • Installer not intrusive: options are saved in plane XML files (though, installer has an option to add entries on the explorer contextual menus; this option need to write a couple of entries on the registry. Any ways, this entries are completely remove by un-installer)
  • It’s FREE!!!

Summarizing

If you have multiple drives and want to view information about all of them in one place this is a definitely must have software.

Do you use any other softwares to manage your drive space? Do let me know about them I am always looking out for useful utilities.

YouTube Indian Edition [Online Diary]

As many of you know, the Indian Edition of YouTube is now live @ http://in.youtube.com.

Till now there were a lot of YouTube clones which catered to the local video content and some of them even got considerable funding from VC’s

I am not sure if this edition of YouTube is going to pickup in a big way, but the below snapshot of the videos section might say otherwise !

youtube india

The above is just a partial snapshot; in fact the entire page is filled up similar kind of steamy videos !

If this is the kind of videos we would see on Indian Version of YouTube, there is no doubt that it will be “hugely popular” !

At the end of last week, Windows Live Messenger users reported that they were unable to send YouTube links to their buddies. As you can see in the screenshot, any message containing a link to YouTube.com failed to be sent.

The issue was rectified by Microsoft over the weekend, but people started wondering what put YouTube.com into their blacklist database. Since YouTube is now owned by rival Google, people started speculating that Microsoft has intentionally put YouTube in their blacklist.

Microsoft has a practice of blocking URLs or domains which may contain malware or virus. Some malicious scripts propagate by sending messages containing a link which infects your contact’s computer. Microsoft has partnered with a third party to maintain a blacklist of malicious URLs.

They detect these harmful URLs based on various factors such as number of times a URL is sent, the frequency of the URL being sent, the number of accounts the URL is sent from, manually checking the URL, comparing with other "block lists", etc. On Friday, their partner accidentally blocked a set of IP addresses and that caused YouTube.com to be blocked.

I’m not really comfortable with the fact that Microsoft leeches on our chat messages to check for malicious links, but at the end of the day, they are doing this to protect millions of unsuspecting users from being infected. Hope they’ll be careful next time.

Let come to the post topic. Today I tried some of popular and on growing adobe air applications like uvLayer, twhirl etc.

Was seeing some of the friends blogger’s sharing there latest articles via twitter as the actual url of the articles were some what longer so every one was using TinyUrl in order to shorten them.

If you don’t  know what is tinyurl?

For your FYI: With TinyURL, you can also make a smaller URL that will work for any page on your site.

Every time I want to make a tinyurl for a page I need to copy the full url from the address bar and paste it in the text box on the tinyurl.com which takes some time to produce the tinyurl for the same.

So, after then I was searching for some simple ways for using tinyurl and I found two plugins one of which works with firefox.

Tiny URL Creator: This extension brings the http://tinyurl.com functionality into your browser itself. It takes a long URL as input, and gives you a short URL to use in it.

Install the TinyUrl Creator from here

There is also another similar add on for Maxthon and Internet Explorer called TinyURL 1.1 which can make the tinyurl for any webpage. download it form here

Find and Use Free Stock Photographs for your Blog [PicFindr] [Techie Buzz]

Posted: 12 May 2008 11:54 AM CDT

“Images say a thousand words”. There is not a more truthful saying than this, images do increase the charm of your post and make your posts look more meaningful. We have even talked about this in our post 6 Tips to make a good blog post better.

That said finding images is not a easy task and to top it finding images that does not have any copyrights on them is a bigger task.

You can use Flickr of course to find such images but there is no dedicated search engine for finding such images. Well don’t fret because I am going to point you to a dedicated search engine which allows you to find Free stock photo for your site which you can use without any hassles and worries about licensing.

PicFindr

PicFindr searches the web* for stock photography that is completely free to use commercially. Several licensing arrangements have recently emerged as alternatives to copyright (sometimes called “copyleft”) and PicFindr makes sense of them all by helping you find images based on what you have to do to use them, whether licensed under Creative Commons, GNU, a site-specific agreement, or something else. PicFindr can even find free images you can use commercially without requiring permission or credit of any kind!

picfindr-logo As you can see PicFindr is a search engine which helps you find free photographs which you can use without licensing hassles.

Does it Work that Good?

I put the search engine to test and was disappointed by the results I saw, they still have a long way to go in providing accurate search results, a search for Bill Gates returned me some pictures which were no where related to my search term.

That said I did find the interface quite good and I can preview the images right from the search page by hovering the mouse over the thumbnail.

Summarizing

If you are looking for free photos without having to go through licensing issues you should definitely give this a try. There is still a long way to go and they have to definitely improve on their search engine and make the results much better.

The interface is quite good and I can preview the images without loading another page which I definitely like.

Which search engines do you use to search for free photos? Do let me know so that I can try those out.

Twitter Shows Its Strengths As Earthquake Strikes China [dailyApps]

Twitter is finally coming of age, and is demonstrating why the microblogging medium is fast catching up to be the fastest news breaker in the world. Something like 7 hours back a huge earthquake struck in China. The earthquake measured 7.8 on the richter scale and thousands have been feared to be dead. The epicenter was 50 miles from Chengdu, which has about 10.5 million residents.

Robert Scoble a noted tech blogger and a Twitter addict first broke out the news on Twitter, even before the news could reach BBC. I was in college when I first received the alert via a text message. When I logged onto the internet the Twitterverse was completely busy with reports of the earthquake.

I won’t really go into much details as to what happened on Twitter this afternoon, but I’d like you to point you to sites that have covered this in detail.

News continues to fly in by the second, and I wonder if Twitter is slowly going mainstream. By their own admission BBC agrees that it was Robert Scoble who broke out the story first sitting thousands of miles away from China.

“Twitter comes of age as a platform which can bring faster coverage of a major news event than traditional media,”

That moment surely came a while ago, with Californian fires, more earthquakes, explosions and many other things. This is probably the first one that is gaining mainstream attention from news outlets like BBC etc…

As Twitter continues to battle its scaling problems, incidents such as this surely put Twitter in a position wherein everyone in the world can benefit from it. I know the investors behind Twitter are looking to make money from the service, but the social value derived from the service far undermines the economic value.

I think that “who’s first” is not exactly the point: “how fast, how many”, and “how open” for the spontaneous collaboration is much more interesting than who broke the story first.

We’re are going to see more of Twitter in the Twitter in the coming days. Here’s to hoping to that things go back to normal in China and may the god help the ones in need. I’m waiting for an official channel through which I can donate for relief purposes. Please let me know if you come across it.

To see the story unfold on Twitter visit Tweetscan. Do you think Twitter is slowly going mainstream and is ready to take on traditional media outlets like Reuters, BBC etc..

For more details on the earthquake visit NYTimes.
