Extract zip, ISO, DAA files with IZArc[freeware] [TechZilo]

Posted: 01 May 2008 10:26 AM CDT

Archiving and extracting files can be done in Windows XP and upwards with the help of built-in tools. However, as with many other things, built-in utilities tend to have very little tweakable options and power features. For anyone that desires better features, the built-in archival utility is not the right option.

IZArc is a freeware archival application for Windows. It has all the normal features expected from an archival application: zip and unzip archives, create self-extracting archives, create normal archives from self-extracting archives, encrypt/decrypt archives.

However, it also has other ‘extra’ features, like extracting individual files from a ISO file (CD image), repair archives, create multi-part archives and merge multi-part archives into one. What this means is that IZArc is a very powerful archival program, with many features not found on similar programs (even paid ones).

In fact, it was such extra features that helped me extract DAA file without using the expensive PowerISO [see tutorial to extract DAA files]

As you can see from the screenshot below, the window is simple and uncomplicated. Once you install IZArc, you can configure it to associate with archive files. Then, double-clicking archives will bring up IZArc with options to extract files. You can also choose the location easily.

IZArc main window

Tip: Instead of double-clicking files, right-click archive file, hover over ‘IZArc’, and choose Extract to .\<filename>, where <filename> is the actual name of the file. When you do this, the files will be extracted to a new folder within the same folder that the archive file is located in.

What is mdm.exe and why it is running ? can I stop it ? [Technix Update]

Posted: 01 May 2008 10:13 AM CDT

We have just received a query from Kashish a techie reader of Technix Update, who wants to use his CPU and RAM by ending up all the non relevant process, but ending process helps?

Yes, it helps a lot in speeding up your system but key factor is you need to know which process to end in your task manager process list.

Let’s discuss about mdm.exe, and how important is it for windows

What is mdm.exe and Why it is running?

Mdm.exe (i.e Machine Debug Manager), is used by the Windows and Microsoft Developer Studio to provide application debugging. It runs as Machine Debug Manager runs as a service and is loaded when your computer starts.

Note: If you do not use your computer for debugging purposes, you can safely turn off the Machine Debug Manager.

Follow the procedure below to disable Machine Debug Manager from running at windows startup automatically in Windows XP.

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Go to File Menu >> Tools menu, click Internet Options.

3. Click on Advanced tab, now select the option which says Disable script debugging and Click OK

Note: If you are using Windows 98 or Windows Millennium then you would have to play with registry to stop it.

See the procedure given below to know how?

1. Open Start >> Run or press Window + r.

2. type "regedit" (without quotes) and click OK.

3. Navigate to the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

4. In the right pane, right-click on the key MDM7, select Delete then Click OK

5. close Registry and restart your system to take the changes into effect.

Do let us know if you want to know about any process running on your system.

Set Reminders inside Gmail with G Alert Greasemonkey Script [Killer Tech Tips]

Posted: 01 May 2008 09:50 AM CDT

G Alert is a Greasemonkey based tool for Firefox that lets you set reminders inside Gmail. Basically, you tell G Alerts to remind you of something, set the time, and then a pop up window comes up reminding you of the task you’ve set - all this happens inside your Gmail window.

You can even associate your emails with alerts. G Alert, according to the author, does not transmit any information on the web, and works completely in your local computer - your reminders are saved only locally. It’s like Remember The Milk, but it works locally.

You need to have Greasemonkey installed on Firefox to use GAlert. You can download GAlert from here. Once installed, you’ll see a bar on the top of your Gmail page.

Here’s a quick step by step guide to how to make it work for you:

Set the time for the reminder, e.g., 5 mins. then click Add Notes. Type some text, and then click Add Note. Click Go and you’re done with it.

g_alert_reminder

If you want any messages to be associated with the reminder, set the time, select the messages, add notes and then click the Go button finally.

In the specified time the G alert will remind you of the stuff you’ve noted down, in a pop-up window:

reminder_popup

If you want to edit the notes and reminders, click View next to the Go button and you should be able to edit the reminders you’ve set.

Note: Now, here are some more things you should know. This script didn’t work with the new version of Gmail when I tried. You need to revert to the old version.

You also need to have pop ups enabled for Gmail.com on Firefox. Otherwise, the pop up blocker will prevent G Alert from alerting you. The project is still in alpha stage, and you might see some niggles here and there, don’t worry just report to the author.

Why would you need it?
If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t want to have yet another account in yet another web service, and just want a simple tool to set reminders, this is for you.

[Thanks Sundar]

Windows XP SP3! What’s inside? [TechBuzz]

Posted: 01 May 2008 07:07 AM CDT

Day before yesterday Microsoft’s imminent release of Service pack 3 final version has been a buzz through not a big fan fare around the internet. I atleast managed to download the 300 MB package from MSDN site and install it. The first service pack for Windows XP has been during 2002 followed by SP2 during 2004. Service Pack 3 for XP comes nearly 4 years after the previous service pack release. Microsoft managed to release the long awaited Service pack 3 on April 29 to Retail manufactures and MSDN subscribers. We expected Microsoft to publicly release it on the same day but unfortunately it has been delayed due to a compatibility issue with DRM which is for Retail management systems. Microsoft had not announced the dates yet but I would recommend you go ahead and download the current version of Service Pack 3. You can download the Final version of Service Pack 3 from here.

Although the Final version of Windows Service pack 3 has been delayed to fix the issue addressed above, still it has nothing to do with us. So we can freely download the Service pack 3 and install it.

What’s inside Service Pack 3?

New features:

  • Black hole router detection
  • Network Access Protection
  • Credentials security service provider
  • Descriptive security options control panel
  • Enhanced security for Administrator and Service policy entries
  • Microsoft Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module
  • Installing without needing a Product Key during Setup

Internet Jumpers are already slip streaming the current service pack with Windows Setup files and made them available to public in .iso format addressing the download as “Windows XP with Service pack 3″. So during the primary installation of windows into a new system, the service pack 3 is automatically installed. You can find one of those in torrent site like Pirate Bay, however, it’s never recommended.

Although that compatibility issue will be addressed via Windows Automatic updates for users who installed the Service pack 3 from RTM or MSDN sites, so no worries to wait for the final release.

What’s next?

Try the Windows XP service pack 3 for one month and if you face no issues with it then it would be a better idea to remove those unwanted backup files and uninstallers of service pack to save space in your desk.

This can be attained easily following the steps below:

The Service Pack Uninstall folder is a hidden file. If you do not find it in the following path, ensure that you have enabled the Show hidden files and folders option in the View tab in Folder Options:

  1. Locate the Service Pack Uninstall folder in the %Systemroot%\$NtServicePackUninstall$ folder.
  2. Select the $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder and delete it.
  3. To remove the Service Pack uninstall option from the Add/Remove Programs menu, delete the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Windows 2000 Service Pack x (where x is the version number of the Service Pack that is installed.)

Download Windows XP Service Pack 3 from here.

Airtel website hacked ? [Online Diary]

Posted: 01 May 2008 07:03 AM CDT

My 8Mbps broadband plan is sucking out money from the past 2 months; somehow I am managing to exceed the 4GB download limit.

With the intent of checking on some new plans, I tried to access the Airtel website http://www.airtel.in

I ended up with this:

airtel hacked

The URL was being re-directed to http://www.airtel.in/srilanka/srilanka….. Looks like the site was hacked by somebody !

Talking of Airtel web portal, Airtel seems to be changing its domain every other month; Few months back, it was airtelworld.com (It was something else before this) and now its Airtel.in !

And with every domain change, they seem to be changing the URL for some of their important offering e.g. Airtel Data card.

Check an example URL for Airtel Data card:

http://airtel.in/level2_t7.aspx?path=1/106

And its not just this URL; every URL in the site seems to have a awkward “level2″ and path parameter. Also the path parameter seems to get a new value with every domain change and makes linking to their site a pain !

How to print a list of files in a Windows directory [Online Tech Tips]

Posted: 01 May 2008 06:20 AM CDT

Have you ever had the situation where you needed to print a list of all of the files in a folder? That might not be too hard to manually handle if you have a just a few files, but what if you have hundreds of files all with strange and complicated names? On top of that, what if you wanted to print a list of all files in a directory and all sub-directories of that directory?

Well that’s not an easy task without some freeware Windows utilities. You can also capture a screenshot, but that’s not useful if someone needs the list in Excel or as a text file. And a screen shot usually doesn’t look as nice as printing a text file.

No worries! You can use Karen’s Directory Printer to print out the entire directory tree structure with as many file attributes as you want, including fields like date created, date last modified, file size, file name, folder name, and lots more!

I love this program because it has a crap load of options that make it the only program you will ever need to print lists of files in directories.

directory printer

Pick your folder and choose whether you want to print file names only, folder names only, or both. You can also tell it to search sub folders and print them out also.

Clicking on the Show Network checkbox will allow you to see all network drives and shares and print out their structures too! Great for office networks that have folder shares on servers.

You can also sort by file name, file extension, file size, date created, date modified and more. You can also put a file filter so that only certain types of files are printed, such as images only, sound files, executables, documents, etc.

print directory list

Finally, you can choose from a large number of attributes that you want to include in your file print list:

print file in directory

Finally, one other great feature of the program is that it adds an option to your Explorer context menu so that you can simply right-click on any folder and choose “Print with DirPrn“.

print with dirprin

Overall, it’s a useful application in certain situations. I’ve personally used it a couple of times and it’s been the absolute perfect tool. On other thing to note, there are two tabs that do the same thing, Print and Save To Disk, except that the latter allows you to save the list out as a text file. Enjoy!

Lifecycle of Traffic generating groups [ Random Thoughts ] [Technospot.net]

Posted: 01 May 2008 06:16 AM CDT

Its a bare fact that there always groups for Stumble, Digg or Delicious where people help each other out to give points to each other articles and try to get popular. Here is the Life Cycle of these kind of groups:

Beginning

  • It starts pretty good. Every body is expecting that they will be getting good traffic
  • Now you start sending mail for all your good posts you write and so do the others.
  • You support each and every post without seeing you like or not.
  • You also get the support back. Nice.

Time where people starts getting irritated:

  • Seeing the huge support now the number of emails is 3 times before with around 3 links each.
  • People are surprised and they feel that now its just traffic games ( Wonder they did not realize before )
  • Now they read and see if hey like it else they just delete the mail.

Death Time

  • People start hating and say to themselves, this group has become useless.
  • People start sending mails and say , I am leaving the group.
  • Number of emails goes down and now you send only posts which are really good.
  • You still don’t get any points.

What went wrong ? Why are you not getting any points for even your good posts now ? Is it just people don’t like it or Something else . Can you see it ?

Optimize Windows easily with FreshUI [Online Tech Tips]

Posted: 01 May 2008 06:11 AM CDT

Possibly not known to most end users out there, there are actually many useful and hidden Windows settings that one can use to configure and optimize the Windows operating system. Optimizing Windows allows you to achieve increased Windows performance, remove unwanted / annoying Windows options, protect system settings and more.

However, most of us are easily turned off by the complexity of having to edit the Windows registry, use the unfriendly Administrative Tools, install mind-boggling system tools etc., just for the sake of a system optimization. To make it easier for most of us to optimize Windows, FreshUI is one of the best choices.

FreshUI offers a free, simple solution to configure and optimize a Windows based computer system. With FreshUI, every tweak can be done from a user friendly, graphical user interface. Once installed, FreshUI will automatically save your original Windows system configuration to make sure that you are able to return to it later, if the need arises.

To start optimizing your system, you need to navigate the system optimization settings that are listed in simple categories on the left pane of FreshUI’s interface. Once you have selected a setting to be changed, double click on its related option on the right pane to change it. To play safe, my golden rule is to change one setting at a time and see if it works.

FreshUI Features

  • Simple, easy to use interface - no more manual registry editing etc. You can quickly know what a setting will do to your system because a description will show up on top of FreshUI’s interface once you click on any of the settings.
  • Huge amount of system configuration and optimization settings in 6 different categories:
    1. Applications - optimization settings for Windows-based software such as Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Notepad etc. For example, you can disable the ability to change a homepage inside Internet Option settings.
    2. Windows Explorer - optimization settings for Windows drives, folders, files and search function. For example, you can hide the C: drive in Windows Explorer.
    3. Hardware - hardware related optimization settings such as CPU, mouse, keyboard, printers and more. For example, you can disable Direct3D settings for your graphic card to prevent your children from being able to play computer games.
    4. Windows Interface - optimization settings to change Windows’s interface such as Explorer interface, taskbar interface, Control Panel interface and more. For example, you can prevent access to the Control Panel to block unauthorized system changes.
    5. Windows System - optimization settings to change system settings such as Windows startup/shutdown, Security, Network Settings and more. For example, a user can choose to change the default Windows boot up screen to another picture.
    6. Covering Your Track - just like what the name says, this is where you can configure settings to protect your personal privacy. For example, you can instruct Windows to wipe out all Internet Explorer history on each Windows logon.
  • Save and restore your Windows settings with ease - useful to return to any original Windows setting in case things go haywire.

save-and-restore-windows-settings

  • Set a password to make sure that you are the only one that is able to command FreshUI.
  • Easy access to some of Windows system tools via the pull-down menu - Dr. Watson, File Signature Verification, System Configuration Editor and more.

windows-system-tools-access

  • Support for 11 different languages.

Overall, FreshUI is a fantastic, easy to use tool to configure and optimize Windows without having to worry about crashing your system with unfriendly tools such as the Windows registry editor. Visigami - Free image search and screen saver for Mac [Online Tech Tips]

Posted: 01 May 2008 05:24 AM CDT

I have a tendency to only write about Windows software, probably because I use only Windows! However, there are lots of Mac people out there and they are growing in numbers! So when I saw a post on the Google Mac Blog about a new image search and screen saver app, I thought I would write up a quick post for the Maccies!

Visigami is an open-source app written by a Google employee that spices up your search for images on the web. It’s actually similar to another program I had written about earlier called PicLens, which is actually a browser plugin that turns your boring image search into a fancy looking animated gallery!

visigami

Visigami is pretty simple: it’s an image search app and a screen saver creator. Type in a search term at the top left and press Enter! Visigami can search from three different image sources: Google Images, Picasa, and Flickr.

Your pictures will now load up in a pretty looking animated way on the screen. You can animate the pictures in a couple of ways: fan, carousel, and grid. You can also change the camera views to fixed, autopan, and mouse pan.

Finally, you can adjust the spacing, the speed that they fly in, and the zoom level of the pictures via the slide bars across the top. It’s actually a pretty nifty application that I wish was written for Windows also!

The cool thing is you can search for pictures, adjust the settings to exactly what you want, and then create a screen saver that looks exactly the same with the pictures from the web! Sweet!

You can use your mouse’s scroll wheel to zoom in and out and while in “mouse-pan” mode, you can click on a image and hold the Option key down to move the images with the mouse.

Be aware that all the flipping and zooming and flying around will take up a good amount of your processor also! Only use it if you have a decently fast machine with a pretty good graphics card!

Enjoy Mac users! Any other cool programs out there like this for Windows, anyone know?

FileHide: Hide/Unhide Files Visibility in Explorer on Java J2ME Mobile Phones [Tech[dot]Blog]

Posted: 01 May 2008 04:12 AM CDT

FileHide is a freeware utility for Java J2ME mobile devices that lets you selectively protect files by making them Invisible/Hidden on your MIDP 2.0 compatible Smartphone. When you first launch the software, it will ask you to enter a password and confirm it. Once the password is set, you can click on selective files to toggle their status between hidden or visible. The files can be stored on the main memory of your mobile device or on a storage/memory card.

Since it is a Java application, you may need to go into the phone settings and select always allow for the different types of permissions listed. Once you hide or unhide any file, its visibility is effected in the built-in file manager or any third party file explorer on the device itself. But if the phone is connected to your PC, you will see the hidden files. There is also an option in the program to show the current status of all files- whether they are hidden or visible. But you will be prompted for more permissions access if you do that.

Click here to download FileHide for Java J2ME mobile devices from getjar.com.

Writing Comment - When and When Not [ Random Thoughts ] [Technospot.net]

Posted: 01 May 2008 12:35 AM CDT

dice randomWriting comments on other blogs or sites is a great way to go deep into discussions and learn more. Its more like a healthy way where you can express your views. But this is an Art because comments vary like moods. We get people firing on us and sometimes making us on top of the world. So the whole idea is When the need of comment arises and when its just time to listen and say nothing

When:

  • You know something is wrong.
  • You can take the conversation to another level by discussing more.
  • You have something to add on and share whats not there in the article.
  • You can help others out if author of the post has not responded or is unable to.
  • An article helped you like you had been looking for a solution like that from years.

When Not:

  • If you are doing just for sake of commenting.
  • If you are unclear to ask and don’t want other to see.( Just send an email and ask direct ).
  • If you just want to leave links saying ” I already Wrote”.
  • If your links are just not related.
  • If you want to say the author about something which is terribly wrong and only the author should know. Save him from getting embarrassed.

So how do you comment ? Do you follow any rule ? Share with me and we can know more.

How to Switch between A1 and R1C1 Reference Style in Excel? [Lyte Byte]

Posted: 30 Apr 2008 11:42 PM CDT

In the last post on reference style in Excel, I discussed about A1 and R1C1 reference style. Sometimes its necessary to switch between these two reference style for easy usage, but how to change between A1 and R1C1 reference style?

This option is different in Office 2003 and in Office 2007.

In Office 2003, go to Tools -> Options.

Click on the General Tab.

Under the settings, Check or uncheck R1C1 reference style to use it or to change it to A1 reference style.

R1C1 Reference Style

In Office 2007, Click the Office button and click Excel Options which you will find at the end near Exit Excel.

Go to Formulas tab and under Working with formulas, Check or uncheck R1C1 reference style to use it or to change it to A1 reference style.

Find what’s indexed latest on Google [Daily SEO Blog - SEO tips for wordpress and blogger users]

Posted: 30 Apr 2008 10:05 PM CDT

Sometimes it’s difficult to find things on Google. Like for instance if you want to search for all the items and the websites related to “your keyword” today or yesterday on a time bound scale, things are going to be difficult.

There is a nice tool which let’s you do it. It works just like a Google search but, you have the option of opting for data to be shows that’s indexed on Google either today or yesterday, last 7 or 30 days. This is a nifty tool especially, when you are keyword researching.

  • You can find out how frequent is people blogging on the keyword.
  • Do a competition analysis on the keyword.
  • Do a study and decide on how and what to write on the article, looking at what’s been written already.

Like for instance, you found an interesting keyword on Google Trends that is related to your niche. And you wanna immediately blog on it to get some traffic. So it makes sense to check out what’s indexed on Google today and yesterday on that keyword. So you don’t want to repeat yourself what some one else has written, which is likely to put you lower on the SERPs. Taking a look at what’s written yesterday and today on Google (indexed), you can easily figure out how to to title the article.

Ex: The current top most searched keyword on Google is “David Copperfield” and you decide to write an article on it.
You do a time bound search and find that many people have already written (today/test) on “David Copperfield Video”.
So you might not want to repeat it, rather write on “David Copperfiled latest Video Released” or something attractive like it (be honest with it please).

Enough said, try the tool here.

Get Directions in Google Maps using Street View [TechBuzz]

Posted: 30 Apr 2008 12:15 PM CDT

We all love Google Maps for giving us the correct driving directions from one point to another. But sometimes, if you are touring an unfamiliar location, it can be a little hard to translate the map in real world. This is because we humans prefer photographic memory of landmarks, than memorizing street names for driving directions. Google has now combined street view with driving direction to solve this dilemma. This way, you can get an actually real world preview before hitting the road.

streetview_directions When you look up traffic direction, you’ll notice camera icons wherever street view is available. Clicking on these icons will popup street view of that turn or intersection. You can follow the arrows in street view mode to get a better view of the road you are planning to hit.streetview_directions2

I think it’s a pretty neat integration of two cool map related services. At this point not all cities are covered, so if your city isn’t covered, you won’t see camera icons in driving direction.

Slashdot was Down! [Quick Online Tips]

Posted: 30 Apr 2008 12:04 PM CDT

Thousands of Slashdot visitors were in for a surprise when Slashdot, the top technology starting point of many was ‘not connecting’. Slashdot is famous for the Slashdot effect which crashes servers and makes smaller sites unavailable when they are featured in a Slashdot story.

The last time I remember Slashdot halted was when they logged 16,777,216 Comments and hit a MySQL posting bug which no one thought anyone could achieve. Netcraft confirmed this outage and slashdot is moving to a new network and hardware soon

All of Netcraft’s globally distributed performance monitors have recorded a solid period of downtime at a number of sites hosted in the VA Software netblock. VA Software is the former name of SourceForge, Inc, which hosts all of the affected sites, including Slashdot, the source code repository SourceForge.net, software release site Freshmeat and merchandise supplier ThinkGeek.

Another popular site for monitoring uptime of websites and servers, Pingdom confirmed that Slashdot was unavailable for around 5 hours from 09:38 CET (03:38 US EST) till 14:48 CET (08:48 US EST).

Top sites like Slashdot take pride in their hosting uptime and are envied by shared hosting users whose sites crash with the simple traffic spikes. No wonder Yahoo! Buzz will not accept like ours, as most sites cannot survive huge traffic.

Long before Digg effect, webmasters prayed to get slashdotted and strategies were devised to survive slashdotting. Last year Slashdot celebrated 10th years and launched Slashdot Firehose, a collaborative system designed to allow users to assist editors in the story selection process.

Google Pagerank Update Starts: Check PR Status [Quick Online Tips]

Posted: 30 Apr 2008 11:28 AM CDT

A Google Pagerank update is underway right now and top websites are reporting fluctuating pageranks. Google PR is often considered a benchmark of site authority and webmasters have always sought higher pageranks. Google pagerank update happens once every few months as SEO experts and site owners eagerly await to seek the gift of Google.

Since last year Google has initiated pagerank downgrades for sites selling text links and sponsored posts. As the pagerank crashed for several top blogs across the Internet, hidden paid text links and sponsored posts rapidly disappeared from websites. However, some sites still continue to use paid link paragraphs on high PR pages secretly. If you still want to sell text links, learn to make them Google friendly. Remember Google drives lots of free search engine traffic to websites, and you need to fall in line with webmaster guidelines.

In October our PR also dropped from PR6 to PR3, and after we filed a Reconsideration Request in the Google webmaster tools and requested a review of our site, clearly telling them that no paid text links or hidden links are currently sold on our site, the pagerank promptly reverted PR3 to PR6.

Check your live pagerank now. Did your site PR increase?
