Manage All Your Remote Connections From One Place [Free Application] [Techie Buzz]

Posted: 09 May 2008 09:00 AM CDT

As you may already know I am big fan of putty due to its ability to allow me to connect to Unix based machines and work with them right from the comfort of my desktop, if I dig further I am also a big fan of Cygwin a Unix emulator for Windows which users to work on a Unix like environment right within Windows.

Talking about remote connections to external machines putty and Windows Remote Desktop are the two softwares I use almost 80% of my day at work as a Software Engineer but having to connect to multiple machines at the same time means more windows to manage and more mess of my taskbar even though I use two monitors to work.

That was only until I came across Remote Manager a excellent software for people who spend more time on remote computers than on their own.

Remote Manager is a software solution that will allow you to manage all your remote control connections in a single place.
Currently it supports the RDP, VNC, SSH2 and Telnet protocols. The main intention is to have a central place to store all your connections and access them in the same window.

remote-manager-add-connection

Key Features

  • Multi-Tab interface to minimize window clutter.
  • Multiple supported protocols.
  • Easy to organize and maintain list of connections.
  • Support for importing connections from Active Directory:
  • Allows creating nested containers (folders) to categorize  connections.
  • “Quick Connect” feature to quickly open a connection  without creating an entry.
  • “Quick Search” feature to quickly find a connection while  typing.
  • Assign icons to connection to easily identify purpose.
  • Screenshot manager allows to collect multiple screenshots and save them all together or copy them to the clipboard.
  • View remote session info and log off sessions (RDP).
  • Portable (with the use of command line switches).
  • “Auto-Update” feature.
  • Show currently selected tab name in window title.
  • Show description tooltips when hoovering over   connections.
  • System tray icon with connection menu.
  • Fullscreen (Kiosk) mode.
  • Assign global credentials to use when no information is   provided on connection basis.
  • Up/Down (Ping) feature shows if the selected host answers to a ping.

Summarizing

The key features I liked in the software was the ability for it to allow me to manage my connections using tabs which I am used to now along with allowing me to easily organize all my connections and save them for later usage. This particularly works for me since I have to access almost 60 Unix servers at work and at times need to be logged in to 10-20 at a time to monitor logs and outputs.

This definitely is a great software and I advice that if you even connect to two different remote PCs at a time, give this a try and you would be happy. It’s only been a couple of hours since I started using this and am already hooked on to it.

Download Remote Manager.

3 ways to block spam and organize email in Gmail [Online Tech Tips]

Posted: 09 May 2008 06:29 AM CDT

Looking for a way to block spam in your Gmail account? Personally, Gmail is the best online email client because it can block almost all of the spam coming to my account and don’t worry, I get a lot! Every month I end up having at least 5000 emails in my Gmail spam folder, so it’s pretty good at catching all that junk for email for me.

However, there are times when you end up signing up for a newsletter or buying something online and forgetting to un-check the option for sending you product updates, deals, and so forth. Those are usually not spam in the traditional since, but if it’s sent to you on a regular basis, it can be quite annoying.

email

Most companies that do this have the option to unsubscribe, but there are many that do not. In that case, there are a few Gmail hacks that you can use to help sort out spam email or email that you do not care to have in your Inbox!

1. The Dot Hack

If you didn’t already know, Gmail does not really look at dots in your account name when processing email. So for example, I could write out an email address as the.dark.dragon@gmail.com instead of the normal thedarkdragon@gmail.com. Pretty neat eh?

You can add as many dots as you like and it won’t matter, you’ll still get the email. So what’s the point of this if the email is still coming to your Inbox? Filters! You can give out an email address with dots in it and then setup a filter later on to have it automatically archived or deleted, if it ends up being very spammy.

If you’re part of many email groups, etc, you can use this to automatically filter out those emails from your Inbox, so it’s not cluttered up. It’s always safer to give out an email address that’s slightly different than your normal one in case spammers get  hold of it later and start sending you crap loads of email.

2. The Plus Hack

This Gmail hack has been around for a LONG time and most people already know about it. However, I don’t think that many people use it! Simply place a “+” after your account name and add words to uniquely identify that email address, so you can again create filters, etc.

For example, I can change my email address to thedarkdragon+Amazon@gmail.com when signing up at Amazon.com. Now I can create a filter and have it automatically labeled whenever I buy something from there. Amazon is safe, but if you’re signing up for a free game download or free music download, etc, you might want to do something like this in case they give your email out to third parties.

The plus hack is useful, but it sometimes might not be allowed since it’s not a normal symbol in an email. In that case, use the Dot hack or the Googlemail hack I’m about to mention.

3. The Googlemail Hack

Finally, you can change the last part of your email account to googlemail.com instead of the normal gmail.com! It’s another nifty way to no give out your main email address and can seriously help clear your Inbox of spam or junk email.

So thedarkdragon@googlemail.com is exactly the same as gmail.com. So if you want to keep your account name consistent, without all of the dots or pluses, then you can just use googlemail.com instead.

That’s it! Three very useful Gmail hacks that you should definitely try out if you find yourself getting lots of email you don’t want in your Inbox. Enjoy! Source: LifeClever

Capture screenshots in Windows with Screenshot Captor [Online Tech Tips]

Posted: 09 May 2008 06:11 AM CDT

Looking for a free way to capture screen shots? Screenshots are great because it provides a graphical element that makes it quicker for other people to understand what you are trying to say or write about. The old way to take a screenshot of your desktop was to press the “Print Screen” button, open an image / picture editor, paste the captured screenshot into the program, edit the screenshot, give it a name and save it to a desired location on the hard drive.

This method is okay, but not really efficient if you are going to take a lot of screenshots. Screenshot Captor is a tool that was created to make it easier for us to capture screenshots .

Screenshot Captor is an advanced screenshot capture tool which defies the old way of taking screenshots of your computer. To take a screenshot, you just need to press the “Print Screen” button once. You can continue to take more screenshots with the same button over and over again without having to worry about the additional paste, edit and save steps.

Once you are done, you can access Screenshot Captor to find all your automatically saved screenshots and continue working on the next processes (editing, saving with a different name etc.) This way, you can capture all your screenshots first and continue with the editing process later, which is much faster than the previous way.

BLOG = Better Listing On Google [Techie Buzz]

Posted: 09 May 2008 02:33 AM CDT

The above code is just a simplification of what I meant to say, the more content you write on your blog, the more are your chances to influence search results.

It has not been a secret bug a single blog however unknown it may be can make a software popular and bring it from the top position to the someplace it never envisioned to ever be in.

If your wondering why I am saying this is because of this, where I rank way above Microsoft for a usual query you would first contact them for. There are many more which I can post about here ;).

So write down this definition and start blogging with the mantra (code) a BLOG = Better Listing on Google = Better Exposure for others = Better Explanation of the product.

BTW I put up a new sidebar and if you want me to write more about blogging or anything else under the world let me know your suggestions. I am open to launching a microsite for whatever topics you want me to write about.

Give Windows XP a Makeover with XPize [-| Life Rocks! 2.0 |-]

One of the prominent changes in Vista over XP is the vastly improved GUI. There are many ways to improve the GUI of XP and one of the freewares to do this job is XPize. Virus Found Inside a Firefox Language Pack [TechBuzz]

Posted: 08 May 2008 12:36 PM CDT

Usually, when we download software from a trusted developer like Mozilla, we are convinced that it contains no viruses or trojans to harm our computers. Surprisingly, that’s not true for Vietnamese language pack for Firefox downloaded after February 18, 2008.

The language pack itself does not carry the virus; instead it has been modified by a virus to remotely load malicious scripts. It’s primarily meant to display advertising, but it could be used for other malicious attacks as well. The virus is a script, so it can potentially harm all operating system. Most antivirus applications will detect the virus as HTML.Xorer.

The add-on has been download around 16000 times since November 2007, but its unknown how many of those downloads came after February 18th. Normally, Mozilla checks for infections when an add-on is uploaded to their site. No subsequent virus scans are performed. Hopefully, Mozilla will take precautions to prevent this from happening in future. The whole issue makes me feel a little insecure about installing add-on for my browser.

Vodafone to Sell Apple iPhone in India [Quick Online Tips]

Posted: 08 May 2008 12:27 PM CDT

Apple iPhone is a revolutionary gadget that every mobile user wants. But in India you can only buy Apple iPhones from the gray market, or they are bought from US or other supported countries and unlocked for use with local networks. But now soon you can legally buy iPhones in India with a supported Vodaphone network.

Buy Apple iPhone In India

A Vodaphone press release says that Vodafone will offer Apple's iPhone in 10 International Markets.

Vodafone today announced it has signed an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone in ten of its markets around the globe. Later this year, Vodafone customers in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey will be able to purchase the iPhone for use on the Vodafone network.

Apple iPhone combines the power of a mobile phone, widescreen iPod, and the Internet in your pocket. Under a year back, Apple iPhone premiered at Apple Retail Stores nationwide and instantly topped the most wanted gadgets lists worldwide. However you needed a AT&T Inc. service plan to get connected. Now Vodaphone will let Indians become proud owners of Apple iPhones…

What will be the sale price in India is yet to be announced. But remember how Apple crashed the iphone prices by $200 last year and were forced to offer early iphone buyers $100 credit! Recently Apple doubled the memory and launched iPhone 16GB model for $499, which was the original cost of a 4GB iPhone when launched!

Anyway, its still fun to watch the funniest iPhone videos.

Chitika Premium Ads Promise Highest eCPM [Quick Online Tips]

Posted: 08 May 2008 12:00 PM CDT

Chitika has released new Chitika Premium advertising units that are designed be your highest performing ad unit (with highest eCPM) ever. If your site gets lots of US traffic, then you can optimize these interactive advertisements to your site and earn money from Chitika easily.

Chitika Premium ad units

So how does it work? Chitika Premium ads will only show to U.S. traffic, and since they are behaviorally targeted they will only display to some U.S. users. When your Premium ad unit does display for a visitor it will show them advertisements they are interested in. If there are no ads to display, the unit collapses away. Great.

Chitika Premium Ads

Chitika Premium ad units are also available is various sizes to suit your site design - 468×180, 468×60, 468×90, 728×90, 300×250, 120×600 and 160×600. You can target using keywords of your choice and track earning using channels. However, you cannot change the fall back categories.

I placed one ad unit below the single posts to try them out. But I do not see these ads since they are targeted to US visitors only, maybe you can. This is great since this geotargeting prevents displaying non paying or low paying CPM alternative ads and saves my valuable ad space, while reducing clutter. I hope they pay well…per click!

Send Emails With large attachments up to 2 GB [Techie Buzz]

Posted: 08 May 2008 11:41 AM CDT

Though email storage has evolved over time from the meager 2MB Yahoo provided once upon a time to the enormous amounts you have now. Though the storage space has gone over the roof the size of the attachment you can send with a mail has not seen the same changes.

The maximum attachment sites for most email providers is about 20MB which will very well allow you to send up to 5 MP3 files but not a huge video you shot with your camera.

Send files up to 2 GB

filemail-logoIn comes filemail a service which allows you to send attachments of up to 2 GB without even registering on the site, to top it you can even use your existing email account to send the emails. The service also allows you to choose and select multiple files for uploading.

filemail-catchline

The thing to note is that the target email account you will be sending the files to will not receive the actual files but instead receive a link to a secure download page from where they can download the files.

Summarizing

Though the service has not achieved something by rocket science there are various other services like this which allow users to share huge files with others, many of which we have already covered here, here, here and here.

I wonder in coming days we would see sites which come up with a 5GB alternative ;).

The Best Use of Twitter for Bloggers [Quick Online Tips]

Posted: 08 May 2008 11:05 AM CDT

Guest post by Sumesh who blogs at Blog Creativity.
Twitter has grown quickly from being a time-waster to a networking and interactive platform. Some use Twitter as a social networking site (to meet and befriend new people), some use Twitter as a micro-blogging platform (to express ideas in few words) and some others use it for Twitter’s original purpose - “What are you doing?“.

Twitter is useful to different kinds of people in different ways. Bloggers use it to promote blog posts and find new audience and friends, marketers acquaint themselves with like-minded people and promote their products, socializing freaks like Robert Scoble use it to befriend 15k users, and Comcast (@comcastcares) (surprisingly, yes) sets up a Twitter account to receive feedback from their users.

In this post, I’ll be rounding up the various uses of Twitter and justifying why one of them is really the best use of Twitter for bloggers. Of course, we all have our own opinions, so I welcome your thoughts on for/against my views.

Twitter for bloggers: Communicate with anyone, any time

Before the advent of Twitter, bloggers were generally segregated into two - the elite, high-end bloggers who were mostly full-time bloggers and excelled in their work, and the hobbyist or wannabe bloggers who couldn’t quite ‘get there’.

Being popular and having to work hard for long hours, probloggers were generally found lacking in conversations with smaller bloggers. Of course, you may point out some exceptions, but they were just that: exceptions.

Fast-forward to the age of Twitter, and bloggers of any stature are able to communicate with probloggers. The role of Twitter: to provide a level playing field. No longer would you have to spend time commenting on other blogs to get bloggers to notice you and give you a reply. Michael Arrington, Darren Rowse, Chris Garrett, Robert Scoble - they’re all on Twitter and a @tweet away.

Here’s my own experience: I have contacted and/or established acquaintance with Darren Rowse (Problogger.net), Daniel Scocco (Daily Blog Tips), Amit Agarwal (Digital Inspiration) and of course, PChere (this blog) for this guest posting opportunity.

Some benefits of using Twitter as opposed to IM or email:

  • Bloggers can chose to receive tweets when they want. This can be a boon when you’re busy and hurrying to meet deadlines. It is almost like an RSS feed for your instant messages - you chose when to receive content. In other words, it is a ‘pull’ system of communication (where you decide when to get the messages).
  • Bloggers are no longer considered rude if they do not answer immediately. When using instant messaging or emails, most people take offense if you do not reply. However, in the ad-hoc world of Twitter, there are several reasons why someone may not reply: Twitter fails to deliver tweets sometimes, the recipient may be busy (and may miss it when coming back later) and/or both parties may forget.

Ultimately, Twitter’s best use for bloggers comes from the fact that it helps smaller bloggers communicate effectively and clearly, and those who ask questions will be heard, whether you are a no-name blogger, an up-and-coming blogger or a problogger.

“The decline of tech related stories that hit the front page. One thing that I would LOVE to see is a site filter. Meaning, if an article is from xyzsite.com, you can block it from your view completely. I’ve seen enough Huffington Post stories for a lifetime.” - 148 Diggs

“Most of the time the main front page is all about Obama. I myself don’t mind hearing about the man, but Digg use to have easily-accessible-information that was useful to me. Now it’s all about what political cause is most represented here. Is anything going to be done to finally obliterate the mob-mentality that seems to have risen to completely dominate digg?” -121 Diggs

I vote for more tech stories on Digg, but the algorithm change favors diversity on the front page to make it more difficult to cheat Digg. It would be interesting to see what top Digg users vote for. Anyway here are videos of the first Digg Townhall webcast.

Digg is also planning in-person meet-ups in various cities, where you can meet and chat with Digg crew . Join the Digg crew at Studio B in Brooklyn, New York City (map) on June 4 where they will be filming a live Diggnation and celebrating Internet Week.

BlogCreativity.com: My new blog about blogging is live [TechZilo]

Posted: 08 May 2008 09:20 AM CDT

I have been writing here at TechZilo for over a year, and other blogs (before it). TechZilo was initially a blog about technology, but oriented towards bloggers. I realized that this was a big mistake because the readership was limited. So, I decided to shift niche slightly and focus on internet and computer tips, and move away from blogging tips.

However, I have been writing up drafts of several blogging-related posts, eager to write about blogging again. Having realized that TechZilo (this blog) isn’t the right place to write blogging-related posts, I stopped writing blogging tips. My initial idea was to contribute all of my blogging posts to popular blogs in the blogging and money-making niche.

However, the number of posts began to increase rapidly, and I also had several good WordPress hacks, tutorials and theme/plugin reviews in my mind. I was determined to start a new blog about blogging. Around the same time, I came across Killer Domains, an ebook about domaining (buying/selling domains). After reading the ebook and gathering several new ideas, I bought the domain blogcreativity.com

So, I am officially launching Blog Creativity.com now - it is a blog for bloggers, with posts ranging from blogging tips, design (usability and critique), SEO, WordPress themes/plugin reviews, WordPress optimization guides and hacks.

Since a good part of the audience of this blog is bloggers, I believe that you will find Blog Creativity interesting. You can subscribe to the RSS feed of Blog Creativity, or receive latest articles by email.

In future, I will be promoting posts from Blog Creativity here, and to begin that, here are two posts that I wrote on Blog Creativity:

See ya’ all at Blog Creativity.
