GMail sports new loading screen [TechZilo]

GMail has previously had a plain-text loading screen which usually says “Loading” (and an option to use basic mode if you’re on a slow connection).

Google has silently rolled out an upgrade to the loading screen, which now sports a horizontal progress indicator, along with an option to switch to basic mode (which was earlier limited to when it took a long time to load).

The screen is as plain as ever, in typical Google fashion, with no background or fancy stuff - just a progress bar and some text. Check out the screenshot below to see what I mean.

Disable restart now message after Windows automatic update message [Online Tech Tips]

Don’t you just love Windows Automatic Update? On the second Tuesday of each month Microsoft releases their software updates and patches for Windows, which are usually numerous, and most computers receive these updates automatically if Windows Update is turned on.

You might notice your computer slow down while these updates are installed in the background. After they are installed, you’ll always get a message to restart your computer.

If you are not in the middle of doing work, which is probably not going to be the case considering the update always occurs in the middle of the work day for me, then you’ll probably click on Cancel or Restart Later.

However, Microsoft felt that when you clicked that button, you were somehow dishonoring their great service, so they keep reminding you of your injustice by popping up the same NAGGING message every 10 minutes!!! Yes I know I have to restart the computer, I do it ALL THE TIME anyway, you don’t have to keep telling me to do it!

Anyway I’ve gotten rid of this message for a long time on my computer and it’s wonderful not having to see that stupid message while I’m watching a movie on Netflix!

There are two ways to get rid of the nagging Restart Now message, one of which is preferable over the other:

1. Stop the Automatic Updates Service

Go to your Control Panel, then Administrative Tools and then click on Services.

In the list of services, find Automatic Updates, right-click on it and click Stop.

Once you have stopped the service, the nagging message stops also. Then you can reboot when you FEEL LIKE IT. Note that the Automatic Updates service will automatically restart when you reboot, so you will get future updates (and hence have to follow the same procedure again the next time your computer installs updates).

2. Modify Group Policy Settings

The problem with the above-mentioned method for disabling Automatic Updates restart message is that it’s a one time fix. A better way is to modify some group policy settings so that your computer will always be updated, but you won’t be asked to restart constantly.

To get to the Group Policy editor, click on Start, and then Run and type in gpedit.msc.

Now navigate down to the following security settings:

Local Computer Policy
Computer Configuration
Administrative Templates
Windows Components
Windows Update

You’ll now see a bunch of options on the right hand side related to Windows Automatic Update. Here is where we can configure your message to disappear! There are basically two settings that we can manipulate to get what we want.

No auto-restart for schedule Automatic Updates installations

Set it to Enabled and Windows will wait for the logged on user to restart the computer instead of automatically trying to restart. No prompt will be displayed at all, so you will have to remember to restart yourself.

Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations

Using this setting, you can configure the restart message to come up again, but at a longer interval. Go ahead and double-click on the setting and set it to Enabled. You’ll see the default value is 10 minutes. Go ahead and change it to something like 1440 minutes, which is one day. This is better if you want to still be reminded, but not so often.

Hopefully, now you won’t see that message anymore and you can do your work without being interrupted every 10 minutes! Enjoy!

Why Gmail loads faster even in slow connection [Technospot.net]

Thanks to Swaroop who pointed out why the image we posted on our last post showed up and why people now see Gmail loading even faster. An Offical post where Gmail team explained

We reduced the weight of each request itself by eliminating or narrowing the scope of some of our cookies. We made sure that all our images were cacheable by the browser, and we consolidated small icon images into single meta-images, a technique known as spriting. We combined several requests into a single combined request and response. The result is that it now takes as few as four requests from the click of the “Sign in” button to the display of your inbox.

That really sounds a good technique. Here is what Spriting means

Spriting is usually defined as the act of creating partially transparent 2d raster graphics for use in video games, commonly referred to as sprites; by extension, it is also used to refer to the act of creating pixel art, though not all sprites are necessarily done in that style. Pixel art comprises a large part of “sprite art” as a whole; though technological advances since the mid-nineties allowed pre-rendered raytraced imagery, or essentially any 2-dimensional image style to be used as a sprite. In some communities, “pixel art” is considered a synonym of “sprite art”, and classification of artwork as “sprite art” is held to the same standards.

Google has rolled out a new Gmail loading interface for slow Internet connections. With this feature, Gmail gives you an option to switch from standard view to the basic HTML view if you are browsing with a slow Internet connection. The option to select the mail view can be found in the right hand bottom of the page. This new interface is also available for Gmail from Google Apps.

Fifteen Puzzle Mobile Game for Nokia S60 with Motion Detection and Screen Rotation [Tech[dot]Blog]

The n-puzzle is known in various versions, including the 8 puzzle, the 15 puzzle, and with various names. It is a sliding puzzle that consists of a grid of numbered squares with one square missing, and the labels on the squares jumbled up. The goal of the puzzle is to unjumble the squares by only making moves which slide squares into the empty space, in turn revealing another empty space in the position of the moved piece.

Now a mobile version of the puzzle is available for Nokia S60 3rd Edition mobile devices called Sixteen Puzzle for S60 (although it is in effect a Fifteen Puzzle game). This version supports screen rotation as well as moving puzzle tiles by tilting the device using the in-built accelerometer sensor. The idea of the mobile game is to shuffle the pieces and re-order them from 1 to 15, leaving the empty space at bottom right corner (#16).

Here are the keyboard shortcuts to use on your mobile device:

Apple agrees to non-exclusive iPhone sales in more countries [TechZilo]

iPhone buzz is on a climb. After announcing sale of iPhone in countries like Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey, Apple is now breaking away from the exclusive deals signed for sale of iPhones (like AT&T in USA).

Apple has signed deals with Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland, and some African countries.

The notable part is that telecom companies have existing agreements for exclusive sale of iPhone. For example, Orange has now signed a deal to sell iPhones in Austria, where iPhone was sold exclusively by Deutsche Telekom. In Italy, Telekom Italia and Vodafone will sell iPhone. Vodafone has also agreed to sell iPhone in Egypt and Portugal (where Orange sells iPhone).

This can only be good news for iPhone fans who are eager to buy iPhones but held back because of having to switch to a new network. The launch of iPhone in these countries may also coincide with the launch of iPhone 2.0, which promises updated interface and 3G compatibility (which translates to superior data transfer speeds). iPhone 2.0 is expected to be announced on June 9, when Apple holds WDC.

File management is a not a real easy task and over a period of time you may have gathered different documents, music files, images and stored it in your PC. During this period you may also made several copies of your files and stored them in different folders leading to duplicate files all over the place.

Hunting down such duplicates can be quite a waste of time and comparing both documents to see that the documents are exactly similar is another headache.

That said here is a very useful utility that will make comparing files a breeze.

File Comparator is a software which allows you to quickly compare contents of any files in specified folders and shows you pairs of file which contains the same data, allowing you to make a decision to delete the duplicate file.

File Comparator can compare content of any type of files and spot the duplicates. The comparison does not take the filename, date etc into consideration for comparison. It will only compare the contents within the file.

In short File Comparator is a duplicate finder which will help you easily find and delete duplicate content from your computer.

I ran a small test and was impressed with the output. I am now raring to put this to test on my 500GB harddrive and run some spring cleaning. Do Away With Windows Restart by Cleaning Exiting Explorer.exe [Techie Buzz]

I have been installing quite a lot of softwares and many of those want me to restart the computer so that their changes are applied to the PC.

While browsing my feeds I came across a cool unrelated tip by DailyApps which talked about restarting the Explorer.exe cleanly, in that I saw another cool tip which could allow you to also do away with the boring restart every application demands.

I keep trying variety of registry tricks everyday, and install and uninstall numerous applications that demand a restart whenever I install them. To get away with boring restart process I normally kill Explorer.exe from the task manager and wait for it to restart automagically.

So I believe that cleanly exiting Explorer.exe will mean that I do not have to restart my PC after all, super cool. Here is how to exit explorer.exe cleanly.

Click the Start button. Press and hold the CTRL and SHIFT keys, and right-click on an empty area in the Start menu. You'll see a Popup menu containing the two options namely Exit Explorer and Properties. Alternatively you could get the above Popup menu by holding the CTRL and SHIFT keys and then right-clicking on the Start menu power button itself.

After selecting the Exit Explorer command, the shell (Start menu, Taskbar and the Desktop) will exit and the other applications will continue to run normally. You need to manually start a new Explorer.exe process by launching Task Manager. Use the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key sequence to launch Task Manager. From the File menu of Task Manager, choose New Task (Run…), type Explorer.exe and press ENTER.

AOL Mail to Open Up for Third Party Applications [TechBuzz]

AOL has revealed its plans to open up their email service API to third party developers, so that they can build applications and content on top of the existing email service. Richard Landsman, VP of Technology at AOL believes that "no single company can control all the applications that users will want to use" and therefore allowing third party developers to build application sounds like a perfect plan to give users what they want.

AOL is also trying out Microsoft’s Silverlight technology to build a rich, high performance web mail application. Silverlight is a cross platform browser plugin that allows developers to create rich, multimedia internet applications. If everything works well, AOL’s new webmail service will go into beta testing by third quarter this year.

We’ve seen this trend in the social networking segment with Facebook and OpenSocial. AOL Mail will be the first in the email segment to open up their API for third party developers. Honestly, I’m not against the idea of opening up a service to third party developers, but is it really needed for an email service? Only time will tell!

Opera Dragonfly, Easy web apps debugging [Brajeshwar]

Opera DragonflyDeveloper Tools to debut Javascript, inspect CSS and the DOM, and view errors.

Opera released their new Developer Tools — Opera Dragonfly — about a week back. The initial alpha version include

JavaScript debugger
DOM inspector
CSS inspector
Command Line to allow commands to be inputed
Error Console that outputs validation errors and warnings exhibited by the CSS and JavaScript connected with the page
Proxy to allow debugging directly on mobile devices

Upcoming versions will also support editing of CSS/DOM/JavaScript, a single window mode and XHR/HTTP Headers inspection. Opera Dragonfly is built using Web technologies (XML, CSS and JavaScript) and will auto-update when a new version is released. The application will run in a persistent cache, so that it is accessible when offline, and so that it doesn’t have to communicate with the Opera server, except when it updates.

Opera Dragonfly will support all browsers that include the Core-2.1 rendering engine (except Opera Mini). This currently includes Opera 9.5 beta 2 and the forthcoming Opera Mobile 9.5 release. A proxy exists that allows Opera Dragonfly on the desktop to communicate with Opera on supported mobiles and devices. This makes debugging on devices easier as you can use a regular keyboard, mouse and monitor.

The early Alpha launch was received with great enthusiasm from the developer community and Opera received lots of feedback from people. There are few things which developers have found and Opera Dragonfly team is working on them;

There’s a problem with the caching, which means that if you flush the cache and then try to launch Dragonfly while offline, you might run into problems.
It doesn’t run with Javascript disabled, another soon to be fixed bug.

The Opera Dragonfly is also working on the Scope documentation which they plan to release in the coming days.

Microsoft has partnered with the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) program to make the Microsoft Windows operating system available on OLPC's low-cost XO laptops for the world's poorest children.

One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Program helps children of developing countries to learn by providing one connected laptop to every school-age child. The XO Laptop is a flexible, low cost, power efficient, responsive, and durable computer for use by children. They recently ran the Give One Get One program to spread the word.

Now the XO laptop will have the ability to host both Windows and Linux operating systems, giving users the ability to run either on the XO laptop. Microsoft has developed customized drivers for Windows on the XO laptop and Windows now supports the laptop's e-book reading mode, standard Wi-Fi networking, camera, writing pad and custom keys, power-saving and other features of the XO hardware. Now hundreds of third-party applications and devices available for Windows will be compatible with the XO laptop.

This will help XO laptop to become more compatible and acceptable to the community at large. Microsoft aggressive marketing strategy to put Windows on every computer in the world is what made Bill Gates the richest man and Microsoft the world’s leading company. Even Apple had to incorporate Windows compatibility to reach a wider customer base to sell iMacs and Macbooks.

Hack Attack : Terminate Explorer.exe Cleanly On Vista [dailyApps]

I keep trying variety of registry tricks everyday, and install and uninstall numerous applications that demand a restart whenever I install them. To get away with boring restart process I normally kill Explorer.exe from the task manager and wait for it to restart automagically. But the problem is that the Task Manager method is like forcibly killing the process instead of terminating it cleanly.

Luckily there is a hidden option in both Windows XP and Windows Vista Start Menu that will allow you to terminate and restart Explorer.exe cleanly. As you can see in the screenshot above there’s a hidden option in the start menu to cleanly terminate Explorer.exe. Follow these steps to get that option visible and cleanly terminated Explorer.exe.

Click the Start button. Press and hold the CTRL and SHIFT keys, and right-click on an empty area in the Start menu. You'll see a Popup menu containing the two options namely Exit Explorer and Properties. Alternatively you could get the above Popup menu by holding the CTRL and SHIFT keys and then right-clicking on the Start menu power button itself.

After selecting the Exit Explorer command, the shell (Start menu, Taskbar and the Desktop) will exit and the other applications will continue to run normally. You need to manually start a new Explorer.exe process by launching Task Manager. Use the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key sequence to launch Task Manager. From the File menu of Task Manager, choose New Task (Run…), type Explorer.exe and press ENTER.

And you should now be looking at a clean shiny new Explorer process running at full speed. This way of restarting Explorer is a much safer process and has been recommended by Microsoft itself. Please let us know how this works for you in the comments.

Gmail has been a powerhouse for me and made my life simpler in managing emails and responding to clients, using keyboard shortcuts for quick access, starring important emails and tons and tons of more features.

Gmail has really revolutionalized the way people look at email first with providing users with enormous amounts of email storage space and bringing AJAX to mainstream. With these and many more features they made the Inbox a much better place.

The one thing that lacks with Gmail though is no support for skins and templates. Gmail has sported the same look from the day it has launched with little improvements in them. Not that I am complaining but there are tons of users who do not like the plain old interface.

So if you are looking to make Gmail look more snazzier here is a template which you can use to get rid of the plain old look, take a look at the screenshot below to see what this small trick will transform your Gmail look to.

To get this look for your Gmail Inbox simply follow these steps. Note you can achieve this only in Firefox, if you don’t have it then Download Firefox now.

Download and Install the Stylish extension if you are not using it already.
Open http://www.naverniouk.com/design/gmail/gmail.css or http://www.s-c-u-m.com/globex/gmail.css link in the Firefox browser.
Right-click on the Stylish icon in the status bar and choose “Add Style to Stylish”.

That’s it once you have Installed the new style refresh your Gmail Inbox for the new them to be applied.

There is a note of caution though, this style does not work with Lifehackers Better Gmail 2 and Remember the Milk extensions for Firefox, so if your heavily dependant on these extensions you should wait for future releases of this style which the author is working on. On the other hand this style only works with “new versions” of Gmail and only has support for English language right now, multi-language support expected in the future.

How to get rid of Unread Mail Count in Windows XP [Online Tech Tips]

If you’re using Windows XP, you might have noticed that annoying “X Unread Mail Messages” message that shows up below the user name on the logon screen. It’s actually a pretty useless number considering it never seems to be right, at least for me.

By default, the Unread Mail Count is derived by looking at all accounts that have been checked within the last three days, including Outlook, Outlook Express, Hotmail, and the MSN browser client. The problem is that it includes all the accounts of other people who have checked their email under the same user name.

There are two ways to get rid of the unread mail messages line under the user name in XP: edit the registry or download the Microsoft Tweak UI Power Toy and change the setting there. I’ll go ahead and describe both methods since they are pretty easy.

Remove XP Unread Mail Count - Registry

Before you modify the registry, always be sure to make a backup! If you don’t know how to make a backup of the registry, then don’t use this method! First open the registry editor by clicking on Start, choosing Run and then typing in REGEDIT.

Now navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

Note that you will not see this key if you are in a domain environment, so it won’t be there on office or corporate computers most likely.

Once there create a new DWORD Value (right-click on the UnreadMail key in left-hand pane, New > DWORD Value) and call it MessageExpiryDays.

Double click on the MessageExpiryDays value you just created and set the value to 0 though it should be the default value already.

That’s it! You’ve now disabled the unread mail message count in Windows XP! Now you’ll just see the usernames without all those useless unread email counts.

Turn off login screen Unread Mail Count using Tweak UI

Ahhh so let’s just do it the easy way! Download the Tweak UI Power Toy and install it. Now open it up and go to Logon at the bottom. Under that you’ll see the option Unread Mail.

Go ahead and uncheck the “Show unread mail on Welcome screen” option to disable the Unread Mail count. That’s it! A lot easier right!? The next time you log on, the screen will not display your unread message count like shown above. Enjoy! Source: Poremsky

Move your files to any folder by dragging using teracopy [Technix Update]

There are some instances when you would want to move a downloaded file or folder to a different location.

Well it happens with me most of the time because, what ever I download any thing from web I tend to download it to the desktop and then at the end of the day, I categorize my downloads then move them to the different folders, like software downloads , Music etc.

For all these folders like Sangeet , Software Downloads I have shortcuts created on the desktop so just need to drag the files on the shortcut icon to copy the files over that folder.

But what ever you do you can’t move files, they will always be copied if you drag files on the shortcuts icon.

So after coping I have to delete the files from the desktop, all this makes the whole process somewhat unproductive.

But I found out a solution to this problem using TeraCopy, Let’s see how

The only thing you need to do is to install TeraCopy on your machine. download it from here

As shown in the image above, you need to press mouse right click on the file and then drag it over the shortcut to the folder , or over the folder itself you will get the options like

1. TeraCopy here - select if you want to copy the files

2. TeraMove here - select if you want to move the files.

and other options like copy here , move here and create shortcuts here.

David alison has written an excellent tip, where he tells that how you can make safari pretend that it’s IE. It certainly is not the emulation, however it may work for those sites where you get a message that this website requires IE only.

Why exactly that will happen ?

If a web site developer has limited resources they may only ensure that their site works with the most popular browser on the web, which is Internet Explorer. If it is an older site that has not been updated in a long time they may have assumed that only IE can render the site properly and, not wanting to have to deal with other browsers, simply prevented them from coming in.

Please note that don’t use this tip for any important, as there are many secure websites (read : bank portals) which still want you to access their portals through Internet explorer and I’ll suggest that don’t even think of trying this technique and that you should refrain from using it on such important and critical websites.

I don’t have IE - Microsoft doesn’t provide one for Mac

I understand that and I find it frustrating too, however Adam Pash has written an excellent tip where he tells you that how you can run Windows and Mac applications side by side as if they were native Apple applications (ah! just with windows looks and UI).

Apart from that you can also use free software called innotek VirtualBox and run Windows XP in a virtualized machine.

Why is Apple not releasing gaming console ? [ReviewSaurus - The Techie Dino!]

I came across an interesting article by Don Reisinger, who suggests that it’ll be wise if Apple will release a gaming console and I second that motion! It really makes sense that Apple should jump in the gaming industry with some beautiful and sexy looking consoles and on top of it, it’ll be even cool if they jump with some amazing games too.

Don also makes a good point that these days consoles are used not only for games but for various different purposes like downloading movies, music, TV shows etc. and with iTunes store in place, Apple has a huge market to capture.

What do you say about the idea ? Will you drop the idea of buying Xbox 360 or Playstation if at all, Apple decides to launch a gaming console, what will be the impact of the news, if at all Apple decides to go for gaming console ?

White Box Testing and its Types [Technospot.net]

Let us take a scenario where you go to the market to buy a cell phone.Before finalizing the cell phone, you check for the look and feel of the phone, features, technical specifications such as battery life, dimensions, color etc.Here what you are actually doing is testing the structure of the phone. Technically speaking, in this example, testing the structure of the cell phone is white box testing.

Here is an Image to give you an idea on types of white box testing and then we are discussing each of them one by one.

Please consider the following piece of code as an example for further understanding.

Unit Testing

Unit testing is a software testing technique in which the functionality of small software pieces is independently tested.
Depending upon the system, these units could be the individual programs/ subprograms or a larger component.
Testing focuses on only characteristics related to unit under testing.
Developers can easily identify and make necessary changes to the source code of unit under testing.
This testing involves programmers who wrote the code.

Drawbacks : If testing scope is too broad, developers does random testing, that’s risky, because each part of the system is not tested.

Statement Coverage Testing

The benefit of statement coverage is its ability to identify which blocks of code have not been executed.
This testing technique verifies whether each line of the code is executed at least once or not.

For above example:( Fig 1. )

Require one test case for testing
The IF statement must evaluate to TRUE

Drawbacks

It does not check for decisions but is affected by computational statements.
Thorough testing of Boolean expression is not possible.
When if condition evaluates false, this code fails. (Refer code given below - Fig 2.)

Branch Coverage Testing

Also known as Decision Coverage.
This monitors whether every branch (decision point) has taken on every possible result.
2 passes are required for 100% branch coverage through an IF statement.
100% Branch Coverage = 100% Statement Coverage.

For above example ( Fig 1. )

Requires two test case for testing.
The IF statement evaluate to TRUE
The IF statement evaluate to FALSE

Drawbacks: Decision coverage of object code is not ensured, through this testing

Condition Coverage Testing

Also known as Predictive Coverage.
Monitors whether every operand in a complex logical has taken on every True/False value.
100% Condition Coverage = 100% Branch Coverage

For above example: ( Fig 1. )

Require 4 test case for testing
Please refer the table below for the 4 conditions possible.

Mutation Testing

The aim is to determine the test cases efficiency, by introducing a fault (mutant) into the code.
If the test cases designed detect the mutant, this proves that the Test Cases are well designed, otherwise the test cases needs to be redesigned.
Different types of Mutants:
- Killed Mutant: These are the faults injected, which are detected by Test Cases
- Alive/Live Mutant: These are the faults injected, which are not detected by Test Cases
- Stubborn Mutant: these are the faults injected, which no Test Cases can detect

Drawbacks of White Box Testing: –

For large systems exhaustive testing is impossible this means to test each and every path of large system is not possible Its time consuming Patience and complete knowledge of the code is required Detailed documentation is required

Conclusion on White Box Testing: -

The catch here is to understand the essence of what white box testing means and where it can be used. The more we understand in terms of practical example and can relate it the better control on performance you can attain.

Note: Unit tests tell you whether your code performed as expected, and code coverage tells you what remains to be tested.

IndiMeme: A Meme Tracker For Indian Blogs [Techie Buzz]

One of my blogging Pal’s Ram has just launched a new site called Indimeme, which indexes Indian blogs and stories from around the Blogosphere.

Indimeme is something that can rival Techmeme in the future for Indian News but it has still has a long long way to go. Here are my opinions about Indimeme.

The Good Things

On first glance I saw that Indimeme has quite a good relevancy factors and displays proper relevant posts to their content. This is definitely the best part I liked about Indimeme.

The other thing is that it has a simple design which makes navigation real simple for the user and does not create hassles while browsing for content.

Concept and idea are both good, the results will be determined by the reach and improvements Ram can put into the project.

The Bad Things

Coming to the part which everyone hates to know, but it has to be eventually be told. Though it’s still early days for Indimeme I hope Ram can take these views positively and work on them rather than wanting to put a gun to my head :).

Indexing is quite poor and does not move at all I had checked the site around 9.30PM today and its already 1AM here, between the last view and now I did not see a single new post being added, whereas I read quite a few posts being added by the blogs Indimeme is tracking within the same time.

Another thing that I saw is that authority is tracked using inbound links to the site which is quite fair enough but seems the site uses some internal linking rules to rate sites. In my opinion they should use some external API’s like one from Technorati to track inbound links to any given post, this would be a better option atleast in initial stage till Indimeme can develop their own linking logic.

Summarizing

A good idea but bad indexing and link tracking logic should definitely be handled and fixed fast. Other than that looking forward to more and more improvements in the near future for Indimeme.

Compfight now sports a new design [TechZilo]

Compfight, is an AJAX-powered website that allows easy and quick searching of Flickr images. It has now undergone a revamp in its design, and looks more modern now, moving away from the sparse interface that was present before.

In my review of Compfight, I had noted that Compfight featured a very minimalist interface with just a text field and a couple of buttons and options (reminding me of Google), hence loading very quickly (inspite of the numerous scripts required for AJAXed search).

Now, it features an updated interface. See the screenshot below.

Interesting bit: See the last line in the screenshot - “Do not disable safe search unless you’re of legal age, in a legal country, promise not to tell your mom etc”. We know that the first two parts (legal age and country) are necessary, but the third one? AOL Joins Yahoo Bandwagon Debuts Free SMS In India [Techie Buzz]

AOL has joined Yahoo Messenger in allowing users to send Free SMS using their AOL India Mail and AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) which they had debuted in India last year.

The offer looks good enough since it allows users to send Free SMS directly from AOL mail. This though is not a new phenomenon as Yahoo Messenger has allowed users to send Free SMS through their messenger client to any mobile devices for quite some time now.

The only catch with Yahoo was that the person who you send a SMS too needs to reply atleast once to you or else you cannot send more than 5 SMS messages to them.

With AOL I do not see any such restrictions listed out on the site, but guess they will definitely have some cap on the SMS messages you can send out. Though with SMS messages costing as low as 30 paise (approx ~~0.001~~ 0.01$) in India for bulk SMS gateways it is not going to raise a huge dent in Time Warners pockets.

The service allows you to send Free SMS to Airtel, Vodafone, Aircel, MTNL and spice networks only.

What is SugarSync?

SugarSync is an application that synchronizes files and data across your devices - desktop or laptop computers and even mobile phones.

How Does SugarSync Work?

First, sign up for Sugar Sync and then download and install the SugarSync manager (available for Windows, Mac and your mobile). Installation is straight forward, and happens without any hassles.

When you run the application for the first time, you’ll need to login to your SugarSync account using the ID that you created during when signing up.

Once that is done, give a name to your current machine whose files need to be synced across other devices.

Then, choose the folders that need to constantly monitored for changes and then synced - you can choose the predefined My Documents, Pictures or Music folders or point to more additional locations using the Add button in this window:

If you’ll need access to your data from your mobile phone, you can configure that too from the next window.

You should see the SugarSync Manager window popping up now. As you can see in the screenshot below, the manager lists the folders that have been selected for syncing - and instantly starts uploading stuff to the SugarSync servers.

You make a change to your file on your PC and then save it - the file is updated instantly across devices - your laptops and other machines - if they’re currently online and have SugarSync installed.

SugarSync also creates a pre-configured folder called Magic Briefcase in your My Documents folder. If you happen to save something inside that folder, it is immediately synced between all your devices.

You can also configure your folders to be archived on the web (Web Archive). The folders that you want to be archived are copied only once online and edits to the file are not synced. Use this when you’re editing a file, but also want to preserve an earlier version of the same file online.

You can browse through your synced photos in photo gallery mode. Get SugarSync installed in your mobile device, take some snaps and they’re automatically synced and can be viewed in photo gallery mode.

You can also access the synced files from your web browser by pointing to your-name.sugarsync.com (your-name refers to the name that you allotted during sign-up).

Concluding Thoughts

SugarSync is an absolutely awesome service - it doesn’t have any niggles at all. I tried it and I loved it. Only thing is that people want file

SugarSync syncs any folder that you’ve told it to sync. Dropbox, another file backup service that I’ve tried previously, requires you to put your files in a specific location for them to be synced online.

This useful and comprehensive list of radio station displays the radio stations according to genre and location. This site is mainly developed for locating radio stations in US and Canada. You can search based on various criteria like zip code, city, frequency etc.

If you want to search for various radio stations in a particular country, then select the country from the list and the result displays all the radio stations with links to their website. I did a search for India and it fetched me around 20 stations, although the list is not a complete one, it displayed most of the top stations.

You can also find Internet streaming radio stations based on various formats. Radio-Locator is one of the most comprehensive radio station search engine on the Internet with over 10,000 radio station web pages and over 2500 audio streams.

Google Experiments With Search Boxes in Search Results [Techie Buzz]

Google has been experimenting quite a lot with search results lately and I was glad to see another new experiment today where they added a search box within the search results to search the site itself.

This is much like having site search right within the search results. Check out the search results in the screenshot below. The search box is place right below the first result with a button to search the site.

I think this would be a rather good addition since I can directly search for more resources from the site right from the search results itself.

When I searched using the additional search option in the results it redirected me to the default Google site search. Check screenshot below.

I have also seen few other experiments which I heard earlier where they added links from their index below the top search result. Check out the screenshot below.

Google Reader Goes Desktop with ReadAIR [TechBuzz]

ReadAIR is an Adobe AIR-based cross platform application which runs Google Reader as a desktop application. It features an OSX-like interface, with a typical feed reader type layout. The application synchronizes with your Google Reader account, so you’ll need to log in with your credentials the first time you run the program.

You can search through your feeds or manage feed subscriptions from the application, just like the web interface. Resizing viewing pane and managing tags is also possible with ReadAIR. Quite a few things have been left out, but the developer plans to add them soon:

Continuation (Allow users to view more than 20 items per feed)
Offline mode
Keyboard shortcuts
Windows XP/Vista and custom themes
Unread count in Mac doc icon

The developer built this application as a fun project to improve his coding skills, but it sure looks killer for Google Reader fans. I switch from Google Reader to FeedDemon, as I felt it was more productive to use a desktop client to manage my feeds.

Recover accidentally closed programs in Windows [Online Tech Tips]

Have you ever ended up closing a program that you didn’t mean to close? For example, maybe you have several browser windows open, your email open, instant messengers connected, and a photo editing program like Photoshop open. You go to close Photoshop, but you accidentally click the wrong “X”, thereby closing the browser and all of the tabs that were open too.

Now you would have to re-open your browser window and load up all of the pages you had open previously, if you can even remember what was there! Pain in the butt! Wouldn’t it be nice if you could recover any accidentally closed program for up to 60 seconds? Yes, you could re-open it manually like normal, but why not save yourself time and energy, right?

GoneIn60s is a nitfy little freeware app that takes care of this small, yet annoying problem. What does it do? Basically, whenever you click the X button on any program, GoneIn60s tells Windows to not kill it for 60 more seconds, thereby giving you a chance to instantly load it back up with no loss of data or settings.

Once you have it download, just run the EXE and you’ll see a small icon in the system tray, which you can right-click to see the list of programs that you can recover (will only show stuff that was closed in the last 60 seconds).

As you can see, I had closed a Firefox window while on the Google AdWords tab. I had several other tabs open and was able to simply click once to get my window back! Sweet! The program basically acts like a middle man for you. Close the program, it’ll capture your request before the operating system does, wait 60 seconds, and then send the close request to the OS.

There are also some settings for the program that you can change, including the shutdown delay, which is by default 60 seconds. Just right-click and choose Settings to customize.

You can also add programs in that you want it to ignore, which means it will not delay the shutdown of the program. Go to the Task Manager to see the name of the process for the program if you want to add it to the ignore list.

There is also an option “Kill Windows”, which basically means that after the 60 seconds time expires, the program will not ask you to save any changes you may have made. I would recommend keeping it unchecked!

I would definitely use this program if you are someone who has lots of stuff open all the time and especially if you use programs that don’t prompt you when you close them, like browsers, email, etc.

Note I just thought of another great way to use this program! If you’re at the office browsing the Internet or watching a video in Windows Media Player, you could close it out quickly so that the program would be hidden and after everything is safe, you can bring it right back up from where it left off! So it’s useful for hiding programs or windows quickly without having to close them! Enjoy! Source: Tech Xpress

Edit MP3 metadata with Mp3tag for free [Online Tech Tips]

Do you have hundreds or even thousands of ripped and downloaded mp3, aac, OGG and other audio files with inconsistent or incomplete metadata? The freeware application Mp3tag (currently at v2.41) can make life a bit easier for those of us who like to keep files organized, with accurate tags.

We've all ripped CDs that we have legitimately purchased which did not give accurate and complete metadata tags in the extracted tracks. You know, the ‘track 01′ of album ‘not indentified’ conundrum. And it’s a tremendous problem when you are converting large numbers of CDs.

There are many tag editors available, and within iTunes you can update tag information as well, but not with the ease-of-use tools that mp3tag includes gratis.

With mp3tag you can:

select all files within a nested directory structure at once - useful for instance to update the Artist and Genre tags when you have all their albums as subdirectories under one directory
rename sets of files based on meta data tags in user-definable ways
set metadata values based on filenames in user-definable ways
gather metadata tags from freedb or Amazon
gather album art from freedb or Amazon
mass update tags for selected files
create playlists from selected files
load tags from a text file

Getting Started

Download mp3tag v2.41 for free here, and install it on your PC. Its XP and Vista compatible. I'm going to illustrate how to complete and correct metadata for several album tracks that I purchased online. I need the cover art, genre and the correct names of six album tracks I purchased online.

After you've installed the application, you can peruse the default settings within the Tools – options menu. For now, leave these as they are. What you'll want to do is use the directory navigation to open a music directory that you want to work on.

The application will open all nested subdirectories, so if for instance all your music is in a directory labeled 'iTunes' you can just open that directory. Warning – if you do this it is going to take mp3tag a while to scan all the files and metadata. So you may want to navigate down to the artist or album. In the example I will use, I navigate down to thealbum that I want to fill in data for:

Mp3tag gives me a window showing all tracks within the selected directory.

I select all my album tracks. You can use the normal Windows key combinations to select subsets. The window is divided into two panels. In the right-panel, you see the existing metadata. You can see that my metadata is incomplete for Genre. Four tracks have a null value and two have ‘Pop’. I want to change all to Disco.

The left-panel can be thought of as the 'control' panel – it shows the values that you want to update into the tags for selected files. You can see in the example that mp3tag understands that for the selected tracks the metadata for the Album, Year, and Artist are consistent. It defaults the control panel to keep the existing values. The literal <keep> is used whenever multiple values currently exist in the selected fileset. Otheroptions are to type in a single new literal value to replace all the existing values for the tag, or use the <blank> literal to remove the metadata.

So for instance in my tag for Genre I can use <keep> and the hodge-podge in my current audio files of empty tag or 'Pop' will be retained. Or I could type in 'Disco' in the Genre field and set all the instances of the tag in the selected files to 'Disco.' So that’s what I will do. But first I will access an external source to help clean up track titles, check all other tags, and try to obtain cover art.

Updating from external sources

A powerful feature of mp3tag is its ability to pull in metadata from outside sources. So, as I start to make my adjustments the first thing I do is to access either Freedb (which is configurable) or Amazon. I use Amazon in this example, and mp3tag pulls the following options for me:

The highlighted row matches my album. I click OK and mp3tag downloads album art as well as metadata from Amazon. The software is smart enough to realize I have not bought the entire album, and matches as best it can based on my track titles with the album metadata.

I click OK after reviewing the track match ups. Mp3tag now updates my metadata. Notice for instance that my song titles are corrected (Staying Alive is now Stayin' Alive;How deep is ur love is now How deep is your love, etc). In addition, I now have album art and an updated album title and release year. I will use the drop down for Genre and classify this as disco (rather than Pop). And the resulting: cleaned, consistent, complete song tags:

Now, I’m not yet done. I will go ahead and rename the files, using the new tags. You can see above that my filenames still have the old track title spellings. I also want to put the artist and album directly in the filenames.

I determine how I want my filenames standardized. Mp3tag will do it in all-at-once (how I like it!), or one-by-one if you so choose. It also gives you a preview, of the new filename based on the current filename / metadata parameters:

That's nifty but what if you have a lot of mp3s that have album – track no – title in the filename but no metadata? Mp3tag also let's you go from filename to tags, just as easily. You use the list of variables:

%artist%	Artist

%track%	Track-Number
%_total%	Total number of tracks from xx/XX track-number field
%year%	Year

And a whole lot more actually. With these you map tags to your existing filenames. Mp3tag can give you a preview of how the metadata will be filled in – if it looks good click OK and have mp3tag complete the tags for your iPod listening pleasure based on the filenames you already have!

Other features

Mp3tag includes context menus that are very helpful as well -including the ability to play a track within mp3tag. That comes in handy for those times when you have ripped albums that resulted in filenames like track01, track02. You can right-click/play, listen a few seconds, and then type in the correct title. You can also create and export playlists easily for groups of files and directories.

So, go ahead and give mp3tag a try. After all, it’s time for spring cleaning!

Top 7 Useful Adobe AIR Applications for Bloggers [Killer Tech Tips]

Adobe AIR aims to facilitate access to web apps and services from your desktop. I was introduced to Adobe AIR applications just a few days back and now I am totally addicted to them. Out of a number of Adobe AIR apps that I tried and tested, here's a compilation of the top 10 which bloggers would love to have in their armoury.

But before that just make sure you have the latest version of Adobe AIR installed on your system. You can get it from here.

1. Google Analytics Reporting Suite

The Google Analytics Reporting Suite brings Google Analytics to the desktop. You can access your blog’s traffic statistics from your Desktop itself - you need not necessarily login to the analytics website.

2. ReadAir

As mentioned before, you can access Google Reader from your desktop using this Adobe AIR application. ReadAIR’s features include:

Mac themed scrollbars and form elements
Add/Remove/Manage tags
Subscribe/Unsubscribe from feeds
Search your feeds
Auto software update

3. Twhirl

Twhirl is again a desktop twitter client, based on the Adobe AIR platform.

WebKut is an Adobe AIR application that allows you to capture web pages, or parts of them in a very simple way. It provides you 3 capture options: the entire page, the current view, or only a selection.

5. AIRPress

AIRPress is rich blog editor. You can create new posts, and manage your WordPress blogs AIRPress. The only issue is that it requires an older version of Adobe AIR (i.e., Adobe AIR beta 2)

6. Color Browser

Colour Browser lets you create and organize your favourite colour palettes. Sets of colours are easily viewable in a clean interface. Edit them, rearrange them, create new sets, and make your own. This is a must have application if you are going to design your blog theme or redesign an existing blog template.

7. ShifD

With ShifD, you can create notes and bookmark websites. You can add content with tags that are easily editable. These are then synced, and you’ll be able to access them from your mobile too.

Is Google experimenting with font options in AdSense? [TechZilo]

Google AdSense does not have options for modifying font type, size or color. However, there have been reports of Google testing different font types for AdSense, live on various blogs. I managed to grab a screenshot of one such test - two different fonts on three ad units (two boxes and a skyscraper), all on a single page.

The above screenshot was grabbed from Torrent Freak, ~~a popular~~ the most popular blog about torrents and file sharing.

I hope that Google will roll out font options for the publisher, or better yet, allow the AdSense ad units to automatically inherit the font of the content around it (in post or in the sidebar, for example).

Microsoft Worldwide Telescope launched [Madhur Kapoor's Blog]

In the previous post, i talked about Microsoft’s plan to launch the World wide Telescope project by the end of may. Now it has been released by Microsoft in ‘beta’. It’s a free tool that allows users to explore the images of the sky at night.

If you are looking to try it, i suggest that you use a fast computer. Its requirements are pretty high. You will find that it is a bit similar to Google Sky. You can explore the solar system, the galaxy, planets using your own choice of telescopes such as the Hubble Space Telescope, Chandra X-Ray observatory center, the spitzer space telescope or others. You can not only view the present situation of the sky, but you can also view past, present and future locations of planet. The universe can also be viewed through different wavelengths of light to reveal hidden structures in the galaxy.

Overall, it is a nice tool for astronomy lovers and for people who are interested in learning more about the universe. But for having a good experience with it, you need a high end system with a good Internet connection

Adobe releases Flash Player 10 [Brajeshwar]

Adobe Flash Player 10 is available for download from Adobe Labs. Code-named Astro, the latest Flash Player is available not just for the MACs but also for the PCs and the Linux users. The general public can now beta test Flash Player 10 and file in their bug reports.

The latest drop also features some of the highly anticipated and requested ones. Some of the Key Features are;

3D Effects — Easily transform and animate any display object through 3D space while retaining full interactivity. Zoho has announced the most wonderful feature and the feature is such that any person who cribs about having too many accounts to handle, won’t be able to say anything. Zoho now supports the ability to sign-in to Zoho using Google and Yahoo accounts!

If you already have a Zoho Account (signed up with your Google or Yahoo! email address), you’ll be logged into your Zoho account automatically.
If you don’t have a Zoho account with their Google or Yahoo! email address, you can simply login and use Zoho Services with your Google or Yahoo! credentials
You can also import contacts from each of these accounts to Zoho directly from the contacts section.

This update is wonderful in lot of ways and the best use is that it will allow not only Zoho users to share the documents with ease amongst those users who don’t have Zoho accounts and they won’t have to sign up for Zoho, just to work on that particular document.

Now, many friends of mine won’t be able to give me any reason for not using Zoho and will definitely switch from Google Docs. I personally know hundreds of people who don’t use Zoho because they didn’t want to maintain another account even though they liked it’s functionalities and features.

Windows XP SP3 (service pack 3) Install problems! [ReviewSaurus - The Techie Dino!]

After the release of Windows XP SP3 there are thousands of people who are facing various problems. The problems are from installation of SP 3, to post installation problems. All these problems occur because people really don’t follow the correct way of installing the service pack :

In order to ensure that you don’t face such a problem please follow these steps -

1. Download the service pack 3 from here (official microsoft download) (direct link).
2. Restart the computer and boot the computer in safe mode.
3. Install the SP 3 from there.

Note : If you don’t know how to boot in safe mode, then simply exit all the third party software and especially antivirus, firewall, anti-spyware etc.

Please note : Some people who are using Norton internet security are reporting that it’s giving false positives after they install SP3. It’s telling ctfmon.exe as a keylogger. It’s just a false positive and you should ignore that alert from Norton internet security.

10 Onsite optimization quick fixes for your blog [Daily SEO Blog - SEO tips for wordpress and blogger users]

This week, we’ll be focussing on onsite optimization strategies and quick fixes that will give you a shot up the ladder. Less time, quick work and immediate results are what we are talking about.

Today, let’s discuss twelve super quick fixes for your blog that will help you get that extra boost on the search engines. If yours is a well indexed blog, I’m assuming that the results should show up in a week or less on the SERPs. Ok, so here goes.

Add an H1 tag to your headings and titles.
Check your blog theme. Select your article title, and view “selection source” (use FireFox for this) and check if the title is put within an H1 tag. If it isn’t you will have to tweak your template and stylesheet to get this done. Make sure that every title is within an H1 tag.
Use of <strong> tags.
You already know that strong tags are best weapons to highlight keywords to search engines. But have you been using it properly? Again select your article text, and view the source code. See if there are strong tags used at all. Strong tags should appear whenever you bold any part of the text. And the reason why you do it not only because you want to highlight a part of the text visually but tell to the search engines that those are your keywords.
I wouldn’t really recommend you to use strong tags for each end every keyword you use in the article. Use it wisely and carefully. If you have been using them too frequently, slow it down.
And, if you have been using bold tags instead of strong tags, convert all of those bold tags to strong tags, by tweaking your CSS.
I would suggest you to use strong tags for phrases like “windows application download here” or “mac v\s windows article read”.
Don’t annoy readers with strong tag
Now that you are using optimum number of strong tags, make sure that they don’t hinder with the readability of your blog. It looks awkward when every keyword appearance in your article looks in bold and readers would not get any clue on why the text is bold. Use your CSS wisely and make sure that all the strong tags inside the articles does not jut out as bold text, rather it should only look so in the source code.
Use “rel” tags for your links
Rel tags are relatively not popular and this is the reason why I would insist on them. Rel tags are not used for normal external links but tag related items. So it means that using more tag elements would help, so use it wisely.
Use “title” for hyper links, internal and external
The title tag too is not used wisely by bloggers because when you insert a link, people don’t really care to fill in all those details, instead only paste the URL. I’d suggest that you use “title” tags for all links internal and external as it gives quite a lot of information for the search engines about what the link is about. Be descriptive using the title tag with as less as 3-4 words, that might be the best practice, but feel free to tinker around ad find your best formula.
Use of “Nofollow
No follow tags are not just for advertisements. You can use them wisely to design your page rank. Check all your external links (use a spider simulator or google webmasters) and filter out all those links (or the necessary) with nofollow so that you retain your page rank. Don’t use nofollow on all the external links, that will make google to flag your blog. Instead, may be check all those low PR pages on your site and analyze if there are lot of external links from them. If they are huge in number, reduce the juice flow by limiting with “nofollow” tags.
Rewrite your categories
Categories and tags are great sources of content for search engine. So make sure you use sensible and worthwhile category phrases. A category like “Chocolate biscuits” makes more sense than “Biscuits”, so rewrite them and make them more descriptive so that search engines can elicit more information from them.
Avoid duplicate content or minimize it.
We’ve made numerous reference to this situation. Use all those strategies like cutting short the article length in homepage, using nofollow etc to curb duplicate content issues.
Footer text tweaks
Rewrite or rearrange your footer text if you have one with worthwhile information. If you have a copyrighted theme, you may have to keep the copyright information, but also make sure that you add information that gives you that extra mileage. More information on footer text here.
Page size
Check your homepage file size now with this tool. If it’s on the higher side and takes time to load, you got to cut it short and use light weight code. Sometimes, when the theme is not CSS, XHTML valid this happens and particularly when you are using a fancy theme, it is common. I’d suggest that you cut it down and use good healthy CSS to trim down all those frills and tweak the code to a normal size so that, the page loads quick and makes crawlers indexing quick and easy, not to mention the readers pleasure.

Microsoft has made available six free templates for Office 2007 and Office 2008 (for Mac) with 9 color options. If you are using the latest version of Office suite, you can download the templates for free. The best feature of these designs are that each of them have templates for presentations, spreadsheets, invoices, letterheads, business cards, email blasts, and newsletters.

There are six designs available now, once you select the design, you can chose from nine different colors and then click on the download template button. These templates are zip files and you can use them directly. The templates are of new file formats (.docx, xlsx etc), so they wont open in older versions of Office.

Add Google Reader To Firefox Sidebar [dailyApps]

Google recently updated the mobile version of Google Reader. The New version works very well with iPhone and other smartphones. The good news is that even if you don’t have an iPhone you can enjoy the mobile version of Google Reader from your Firefox Sidebar.

Like other web apps that are designed for the iPhone interface, Google Reader fits very well in Firefox (and other browsers) sidebar.

Looks nice isn’t it? Adding one to your own Firefox is simple. Just follow these steps..

Open the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks/Organize Bookmarks)
If you are using Firefox 2, then in the File menu select New bookmark and in Firefox 3, press Organize in the toolbar and select New bookmark
Enter a name, http://www.google.com/reader/i/ for location, and ensure to check Load this bookmark in the sidebar.
Press Save Changes and now you can select the bookmark to load Google Reader in the sidebar.

Here are some more services which work very well with Firefox Sidebar. To use any of these follow the instruction as above, and just replace the location URL when required.

Mozilla Messaging has released the first alpha of Shredder email client (or better known as Thunderbird 3.0). This version of Thunderbird uses the same Gecko 1.9 engine, which powers Firefox 3. This means, you’ll get the same performance improvements which were built into Firefox 3.

Thunderbird 3.0 Alpha 1 features tabs for messages. Instead of opening messages in new Windows, Thunderbird 3.0 lets you open them in new tabs, just like Firefox. I find this really amazing because it will help me cut down the clutter and same some screen real estate.

You’ll also notice a shiny new Add-on Manager, which resembles a lot like Firefox 3’s Add-on manager. When first opened, it will show you the list of recommended add-ons. Breakpad crash reporter replaces the old crash reporter in this version. For Mac users, Thunderbird is now a native Cocoa application and can read data from Mac OS X’s Address Book.

Lightning Calendar add-on was supposed to be integrated, but it hasn’t been integrated in this release. Hopefully, we’ll see Lightning in future versions of Thunderbird 3.0. At this point, we can’t consider Thunderbird to be almost stable because many features are yet to be added and bugs are left to be weeded out.

ReadAir: Desktop Client for Google Reader [Quick Online Tips]

I always wanted to use my favorite RSS aggregator Google Reader as a desktop client, but it was available online only. Check out ReadAir, an OSX themed Desktop Client for Google Reader, and experience a new way to read your feeds.

Readair works on both Mac or Windows and was built with Adobe Air. If the Googly design bothered you, then welcome the sleek Mac OSX design. ReadAir will allow full synchronization with Google Reader Account, let you manage tags and subscribe / unsubscribe from feeds. You can also search your feeds and resize the viewing pane.

I installed Adobe Air and then installed ReadAir. It was all a smooth installation, and in minutes all my feeds were in ReadAir. Then I realized that ReadAir still needs more work to give me the full Google Reader experience.

Firstly all feeds were unread, which is expected once you import to a new reader client, but there was no unread count. Then I realized that my favorite shortcuts do not work and I cannot read more than 20 articles per feed. I checked my own feed, but could not see embeded Youtube videos, the feedflare was gone and I could not star or share the articles. Autologin is good, but I am still figuring out a how to logout.

ReadAir is hosted on Google Code and the creator is aware of the drawbacks and is working on the todo list. I see a lot of potential for this tool if all Google Reader features can be incorporated well enough. Remember that this ReadAir has an Auto software update feature and hopefully new versions will fix several of these issues.

Maybe Google Reader will release its own desktop version, different from Google Desktop that will let Google reader fans power up their desktops with more feeds..
